On April 1, 2025, at 8:10 a.m., Petronas confirmed a fire had broken out on a section of its main gas pipeline operated by Petronas Gas Berhad (PGB), located near Putra Heights in Subang Jaya, Selangor. The affected section of the pipeline was promptly isolated, and all relevant stakeholders were notified. Petronas emphasized that its top priorities remain ensuring the safety of the local community, protecting the environment, and maintaining the security of the nation’s gas supply. Although three nearby retail stations—PS Putra Heights, PS KM2 LDP, and PS Putra Bestari—were not directly affected by the fire, they were temporarily closed as a precautionary measure.

Ongoing Challenges and Investigation Progress

As of now, heavy rainfall continues to hinder investigation efforts at the blast site. The fire, which erupted on the PGB pipeline, resulted in injuries to more than 140 people—38 of whom are still receiving medical treatment—and destroyed 87 residential homes. The incident has also triggered a gas supply shortage that is affecting a wide range of businesses and industrial operations around Kuala Lumpur and the Klang Valley.

Persistent rain has caused water to pool within the crater formed by the explosion, slowing excavation efforts. Authorities are currently working to drain the water in order to expose the damaged pipeline and advance the investigation into the cause of the blast.

Selangor Police Chief Hussein Omar Khan reported that over 100 individuals have been interviewed, including contractors, subcontractors, and workers involved in sewer pipeline installations in the vicinity. Authorities are also considering a tip from a member of the public, who suggested fireworks set off a day prior to the incident may have played a role. An official inquiry has been launched to determine whether any criminal activity is connected to the explosion.

In addition, police have re-excavated a segment of the newly installed sewer pipeline. That pipeline was laid at a depth of 2.1 meters below the road surface, while the Petronas gas pipeline lies 6 to 7 meters underground. Although the contractor responsible for the sewer work has not been identified publicly, there is currently no evidence of wrongdoing. Preliminary findings suggest that the earthworks were conducted approximately 30 meters from the explosion site. Further investigation is expected to take another two weeks.

Economic Impact and Industry Response

The blast has caused major disruptions to approximately 200 industrial facilities across the Klang Valley. According to Federation of Malaysian Manufacturers (FMM) President Soh Thian Lai, affected companies are dealing with production delays, financial setbacks, and significant disruptions to their supply chains. To mitigate the impact, businesses are exploring temporary alternatives such as liquefied natural gas (LNG) supply via truck and other backup gas delivery options. FMM is actively engaging with the Energy Commission, Gas Malaysia Energy Services, and government authorities to expedite the resumption of gas supply, which is currently expected to be restored by April 20.
