Petrobras plans to allocate R$20 million toward researching the generation methods and viability of extracting natural hydrogen within Brazil. Also referred to as geological hydrogen, this resource is formed within the Earth through various processes. Natural hydrogen holds promise as a renewable energy source, offering the advantage of producing no greenhouse gases during its utilization.

The research initiative commenced in October 2023, beginning in Bahia, and is slated to extend to other states across the nation. This effort aligns with the directives outlined in the Strategic Plan 2024-2028+.

Since 2022, Petrobras has been conducting training programs for its technical personnel to enhance their understanding of the subject matter. Additionally, the company has been actively engaging with the scientific community, exemplified by initiatives like the inaugural Natural Hydrogen Workshop held at our Research Center (Cenpes) in March of this year, which brought together experts from Brazil and beyond. Collaborative efforts in researching and testing tools for natural hydrogen prospecting entail partnerships with both domestic and international institutions and companies.

"Hydrogen stands out as a highly promising alternative in our pursuit of decarbonization objectives. As outlined in our Strategic Planning, Petrobras is actively engaged in exploring the hydrogen value chain through project studies and strategic partnerships, with a keen focus on market dynamics and research and development activities. Our ongoing research initiatives concerning natural hydrogen underscore our commitment to assessing the potential of this energy source within Brazil," stated Carlos José do Nascimento Travassos, Director of Engineering, Technology, and Innovation.

Petrobras' planned investments in research and development for the low-carbon economy until 2028 are anticipated to reach US$0.7 billion. This represents an increase from 15% of Petrobras' total R&D investments in 2024 to 30% by the conclusion of the period.

Petrobras, a publicly traded company, specializes in operations within the oil, natural gas, and energy sectors. With decades of experience, Petrobras has emerged as a global leader in exploration and production, particularly in Brazil's challenging basins, including deep and ultra-deep waters.

Beyond extraction, Petrobras is involved in a comprehensive process that includes the transportation of oil and gas to its refineries and natural gas treatment units. Consequently, Petrobras prioritizes ongoing enhancement and modernization of these facilities to ensure the production of high-quality products.

Furthermore, Petrobras places a strong emphasis on operating at low costs while actively reducing its carbon footprint. This commitment not only enhances operational efficiency but also aligns with the company's dedication to sustainable development in a transitioning society.

Currently, Petrobras organizes its operations into three main segments: Exploration and Production (E&P), Refining, Transportation, and Marketing (RT&C), and Gas and Energy (G&E).
