Petrobras has signed a significant agreement with PRIO, allowing the operator to access the Campos Basin Integrated Natural Gas Flow System (SIE-BC) and the Cabiúnas Gas Treatment Unit (UTGCAB). This agreement, which became operational on January 1, 2025, grants PRIO the ability to utilize Petrobras' gas pipeline network to transport and process natural gas from its Frade fields, where the company holds a 100% stake, and the Albacora Leste field, where it holds a 90% stake.
This move is a key step in Petrobras’ ongoing efforts to foster a more open, sustainable, and competitive natural gas market in Brazil. The agreement comes as part of Petrobras’ commitment to complying with the gas law, which mandates access to gas flow and processing infrastructure on a negotiated basis, thus enabling greater participation from various market players.
Mauricio Tolmasquim, Petrobras’ Director of Energy Transition and Sustainability, emphasized the company’s commitment to strengthening the natural gas sector: “Petrobras is dedicated to contributing to the creation of an open, sustainable, and competitive natural gas market with a diversity of agents throughout the entire value chain,” he said.
Through this agreement, PRIO, which operates in Brazil's Campos Basin, will have the flexibility to transport natural gas through Petrobras' extensive pipeline infrastructure, which is one of the largest in the country. The use of Petrobras' gas transportation and processing facilities will help PRIO efficiently manage the flow and treatment of natural gas from its assets in the Campos Basin. This agreement will also have significant implications for the Brazilian natural gas market, as it facilitates broader access to critical infrastructure that supports gas production and processing activities in the region.
Petrobras is making significant strides in aligning itself with Brazil's growing energy market needs. The state-run oil giant already has similar contracts in place with nine other producers across Brazil's key gas fields, including the Santos Basin (SP and RJ), Campos Basin (RJ), Polo Catu (BA), and Polo Cacimbas (ES). These agreements aim to promote a more inclusive and competitive natural gas industry by granting access to the essential infrastructure necessary for efficient gas production, transportation, and processing.
The Gas Law, which came into effect as part of Brazil's broader energy market reforms, seeks to modernize and liberalize the country's natural gas industry by encouraging investment and greater competition. The implementation of this law has spurred increased activity in the Brazilian energy sector, providing a much-needed boost to the growth of natural gas production and infrastructure development.
