Petrobras has signed a Protocol of Intent with Companhia Siderúrgica Nacional S.A. (CSN) and its subsidiary, CSN Inova Soluções S.A., a company dedicated to driving innovation projects. This agreement marks a crucial initial step in exploring a potential business partnership to develop a commercial-scale low-carbon hydrogen plant in Paraná, Brazil. The plant aims to produce low-carbon hydrogen using water electrolysis powered by renewable electricity sources. This type of hydrogen can be used as a cleaner fuel or as a sustainable input in industrial processes, presenting significant potential for reducing emissions in various applications.

The initiative reflects the shared commitment of Petrobras and CSN to support global and local decarbonization efforts. For CSN, this project represents an opportunity to incorporate low-carbon technologies into its industrial operations, helping to reduce its carbon footprint. For Petrobras, the collaboration aligns with its Strategic Plan 2050 and Business Plan 2025-2029, which emphasize preparing the company to lead the energy transition responsibly. These plans focus on reducing Petrobras’ emissions while expanding the availability of more sustainable energy products, reinforcing the company’s position as a leader in the transition to a lower-carbon economy.

The production of low-carbon hydrogen is a key component in advancing Brazil’s sustainability goals. By leveraging renewable electricity sources for hydrogen production, the initiative contributes to the development of cleaner energy alternatives and supports global efforts to combat climate change. It also aligns with international trends, as industries worldwide increasingly turn to hydrogen as a critical solution for reducing industrial emissions and enhancing energy efficiency.

Establishing such a project involves significant technical, financial, and operational challenges, which the partnership seeks to address collaboratively. By pooling resources, expertise, and governance practices, Petrobras and CSN aim to mitigate risks and foster innovation. The collaboration also promotes the exchange of information and technological advancements, which will strengthen the competitiveness of both companies while accelerating the transition to cleaner energy solutions.

This partnership not only underscores Petrobras’ commitment to innovation and sustainability but also highlights the value of strategic alliances in achieving shared environmental goals. By working together, Petrobras and CSN can drive forward initiatives that not only benefit their operations but also contribute to a broader transition toward a more sustainable and decarbonized energy future for Brazil and beyond.

The CSN Group, one of the world’s largest integrated steel producers, operates across 17 Brazilian states and extends its presence internationally to countries including Germany, Portugal, the United States, and Switzerland. Its shares are traded on both the São Paulo Stock Exchange (BM&FBovespa) and the New York Stock Exchange (NYSE). The group’s assets include an integrated steel plant, five industrial facilities (two located overseas), and a variety of natural resource operations, such as iron ore, limestone, dolomite, and tin mines. Additionally, CSN manages a flat steel distribution network, port terminals, investments in railroads, and stakes in hydroelectric plants.
