The pursuit of lighter and longer-range electric vehicle (EV) batteries has led to innovations incorporating silicon into battery anodes. At the heart of this groundbreaking initiative is Koch Modular's unique modular process for silane production. Typically, silane is transported in tube trailers, incurring significant costs due to their weight relative to the volume of silane gas they carry. George Schlowsky, President of Koch Modular, emphasizes the challenges in shipping silane at the required quantities for battery production. The innovative approach of integrating modular silane production into OneD's Sinanode process is expected to yield substantial cost reductions in battery production, while simultaneously enhancing the range and charging speed of EV batteries.
The integrated plant resulting from the OneD-Koch Modular partnership is projected to manufacture approximately 20,000 tons per year of silicon-enhanced EV-grade graphite, with plans for scaling up to 40,000 tons per year. OneD has been actively engaged in this arena, operating a single-tube reactor since 2018, producing several tons annually. In April, the company is set to launch a 100-ton per year unit in Moses Lake, Washington, marking a significant step in their commitment to advancing the production of silicon-enhanced graphite anodes in North America.
