Global mineral processing leader Omya has completed the first phase of a major revitalization project at its specialty fertilizer granulation plant in eastern Kansas. This milestone marks a significant step forward in the company’s strategy to enhance its agricultural offerings throughout the Midwest and Great Plains.
The upgraded facility, known as Omya Kansas, is now better equipped to serve farmers with high-quality granulated fertilizer products designed for row crops, specialty agriculture, turfgrass, and the home retail sector. The improvements also lay the groundwork for continued regional growth and product development.
Omya acquired the Wathena-based plant in 2022 with the intention of aligning it with the company’s global standards for quality and operational efficiency. The renovation includes a suite of upgrades that improve both product quality and employee experience. Key improvements include a new quality control lab, enhanced dust control systems, modernized feed controls, updated granule sizing screens, and fully refurbished roller mills and pin mixers.
Additionally, Omya invested in new HVAC systems for better climate control in operational areas, a mobile vacuum trailer to support easier facility clean-up, and updated signage for improved site navigation and safety. The company also renovated employee facilities such as break and locker rooms to support a more comfortable work environment.
Olav Bergset, Director of Operations at Omya Kansas, emphasized that the project reflects a dual commitment to both product excellence and community development. “This investment enhances the work environment for our employees and ensures the facility meets Omya’s world-class standards,” he said. “We’re now positioned to deliver consistent, high-quality soil health and nutrient solutions to growers across the region.”
Bergset noted that the physical improvements go hand-in-hand with Omya’s broader goals of workforce development and operational excellence. “Making the facility more comfortable and efficient supports our long-term mission to provide industry-leading service. From adding shifts to creating more training and advancement opportunities, we’re proud to be contributing to job growth in the community.”
The company plans to continue its investment in 2025 with a second phase of upgrades to further expand capabilities and reinforce its presence in the Midwest.
“The successful completion of this first phase is something to celebrate,” Bergset added. “And with more enhancements coming, the future of Omya Kansas is full of promise.”
