Sohar Aluminium and Oman Aluminium Processing Industries (OAPIL) have entered into a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to join forces and investigate potential avenues for producing environmentally friendly, low carbon aluminum using renewable energy sources and recycled aluminum scrap.
The MoU was recently finalized and publicly announced by both companies during Oman Sustainability Week. This national event serves as a platform dedicated to addressing sustainability concerns, particularly related to energy, water resources, and environmental conservation in the Sultanate of Oman.
The signing of this MoU underscores the dedication of Sohar Aluminium and OAPIL to aid in achieving Oman's goal of net-zero carbon emissions by 2050. It mirrors their aspirations for environmental, social, and innovative progress, aligning with their joint efforts to foster a more sustainable future.
Eng. Said bin Mohammed al Masoudi, CEO of Sohar Aluminium, remarked on the MoU, stating, "Aligned with our commitment to responsible aluminium production, this partnership advances our goal of achieving Net Zero by 2050, in accordance with Oman's drive towards carbon neutrality. Additionally, it signifies a tangible result of the Aluminium Recycling Forum organized by Sohar Aluminium, emphasizing maximizing local value through recycling and fostering a circular economy."
On behalf of OAPIL, Erkan Aydogdu, Shareholder’s Representative and CEO of Oman Cables Industry SAOG, expressed, “Sustainability holds paramount importance for Oman Cables Group. OAPIL, a wholly owned subsidiary of Oman Cables, has consistently prioritized sustainability, focusing on initiatives such as aluminum scrap recycling, dross aluminum recovery, and steel drum reuse, alongside waste reduction measures. Our collaboration with Sohar Aluminium to explore low-carbon green aluminum rods and conductors marks a significant step forward. OAPIL's endeavors align with the decarbonization objectives of our global clientele. Moreover, OAPIL is dedicated to establishing a regional benchmark for Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) practices through its strategic focus and steadfast commitment to environmental preservation.”
Oman Aluminium Processing Industries (OAPIL) stands as one of Sohar Aluminium's downstream clients. By providing OAPIL with liquid metal aluminum, the need for solidification, remelting, and long-distance transportation is eliminated, significantly reducing environmental impact. OAPIL transforms this liquid product into aluminum rods and overhead line conductors for power transmission and distribution, distributing them locally and exporting them to over forty countries globally.
Established in September 2004, Sohar Aluminium embarked on a pioneering Greenfield aluminum smelter venture in the Sultanate of Oman. It is co-owned by OQ SAOC, Abu Dhabi National Energy Company PJSC - TAQA, and Rio Tinto.
