On August 23 2024, the Sakigake, the world’s first ammonia-fueled commercial vessel, was completed by NYK and IHI Power Systems Co., Ltd. (IHI Power Systems) in collaboration with Nippon Kaiji Kyokai (ClassNK). This groundbreaking tugboat represents a significant milestone in maritime technology, showcasing the potential of ammonia as a sustainable fuel. The vessel was developed as part of a Green Innovation Fund Project, launched by Japan’s New Energy and Industrial Technology Development Organization (NEDO) in October 2021, aimed at creating vessels powered by domestically produced ammonia-fueled engines.

The Sakigake will be employed by NYK Group’s Shin-Nippon Kaiyosha for a three-month demonstration period in Tokyo Bay. This trial will evaluate the vessel’s performance and operational efficiency in real-world conditions, marking an important step in the adoption of alternative fuels in the shipping industry. The project underscores the commitment to advancing green technologies and reducing the maritime sector’s carbon footprint through innovative solutions.

The predecessor to the newly converted vessel was an LNG-fueled tugboat, completed in August 2015 as Japan's first LNG-powered vessel. After eight years of service in Tokyo Bay, the tug was docked at NYK Group's Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. for a significant upgrade to ammonia fuel. This involved replacing the main engine and other components with ammonia-compatible ones and conducting sea trials with ammonia as the new fuel. The updated vessel, now named Sakigake, aims to lead the way in ammonia-fueled maritime technology, just as its predecessor did with LNG.

As part of NEDO’s Green Innovation Fund Project, NYK is spearheading the development of an ammonia-fueled medium gas carrier (AFMGC) in partnership with Japan Engine Corporation, Nihon Shipyard Co., Ltd., IHI Power Systems, and ClassNK. This initiative focuses on integrating domestically produced ammonia-fueled engines into the vessel’s design. The AFMGC is anticipated to be delivered by November 2026, marking a significant advancement in the adoption of ammonia as a maritime fuel.

NYK Group is dedicated to advancing the decarbonization of the shipping industry by promoting the use of ammonia-fueled vessels. The company plans to leverage the insights and knowledge gained from this research and development project to drive broader adoption and innovation in ammonia-powered shipping solutions, further supporting global sustainability goals.

In March 2023, the NYK Group launched its medium-term management plan, "Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026," outlining a commitment to sustainable growth and environmental responsibility. Aligned with the company's core philosophy and new corporate vision, NYK aims to create value for the future by focusing on ESG initiatives and expanding its business offerings.

To further emphasize its dedication to sustainability, NYK has introduced the "NYK GREEN EARTH" brand. This initiative highlights the company's efforts to generate new value through low-carbon and decarbonization strategies, positioning NYK as a leader in green logistics.
