NYK has achieved a significant milestone with the successful delivery of the first capesize LNG-fuelled bulk carrier, marking a groundbreaking achievement in the Japanese shipbuilding industry. This endeavor is part of NYK's broader initiative to expand its fleet of LNG-fuelled vessels, aligning with the NYK Group's ambitious target of reducing greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions by 45% from fiscal 2021 levels by fiscal 2030. Simultaneously, NYK is actively addressing the challenge of decarbonizing the entire supply chain.

Named "SG Ocean," the vessel embodies NYK's commitment to sustainability under the "Sail GREEN" brand, emphasizing the reduction of GHG emissions in goods transport and contributing to the eco-friendly supply chains of its customers. The vessel's nomenclature symbolizes a majestic voyage in the vast open ocean while upholding a dedication to environmental protection. The naming ceremony witnessed the presence of key figures, including Koji Kakigi, President and CEO of JFE Holdings, Inc., and Takaya Soga, President of NYK.

The adoption of LNG as the primary fuel source for the capesize bulk carrier marks a noteworthy leap towards environmental responsibility. In comparison to conventional heavy-oil-fuelled vessels, the LNG-fuelled vessel is poised to emit virtually no sulfur oxides (SOx), reduce nitrogen oxide (NOx) by 75%, and decrease carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by 25%. Furthermore, the vessel is designed to comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) stringent NOx emission regulations, achieving Tier III compliance.

The vessel is equipped with the latest 7X62DF-2.1 iCER dual-fuel slow-speed diesel engine, a cutting-edge technology developed by WinGD, a globally recognized marine engine design company. This innovative engine design not only ensures high performance but also plays a pivotal role in minimizing methane emissions when utilizing LNG fuel. In addition to the engine technology, meticulous planning and strategic placement of the LNG fuel tank and supply system have been implemented, allowing the capesize bulk carrier to maintain cargo hold capacity and loadable quantity comparable to conventional vessels of the same size, despite the additional weight of new equipment.

NYK's foray into LNG-fuelled vessels represents a proactive approach to combatting climate change in the maritime industry. The company's commitment to sustainable practices, emissions reduction, and adherence to regulatory standards positions it as a leader in environmentally conscious shipping solutions. The successful delivery of the first capesize LNG-fuelled bulk carrier underscores NYK's dedication to fostering a cleaner and greener future for the shipping sector, thereby contributing to global efforts to combat climate change.
