In a historic step towards ammonia-fueled shipping, NYK successfully completed the world's first "truck-to-ship" bunkering of ammonia fuel for their tugboat, the "A-Tug." This milestone, achieved on July 17th at the port of Yokohama, paves the way for the A-Tug to become the first commercially operated ammonia-fueled vessel upon its completion at the end of August.

NYK conducted a fuel ammonia replenishment at Honmoku Wharf, Yokohama, under a supply agreement with JERA Co., Inc., established in late May. This initiative was made possible through collaboration with Yokohama’s Port and Harbor Bureau. The ammonia used, ECOANN, produced by Resonac Corporation at its Kawasaki plant, incorporates recycled plastics in its production, enhancing its environmental credentials. ECOANN is particularly noted for its eco-friendly properties and has been chosen for sea trials of the A-Tug, currently undergoing modifications at NYK Group's Keihin Dock Co. Ltd. Post-delivery, Shin Nippon Kaiyosha, the charterer, will continue receiving fuel ammonia supplied by JERA.

Ammonia is gaining recognition as a next-generation fuel that helps combat global warming, as it produces no carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions when burned. However, its toxicity requires stringent safety protocols during handling and replenishment. Ahead of this refueling operation, extensive consultations took place involving JERA, Resonac, and other stakeholders to develop safe operational procedures for fueling and a secure transportation system to the port area. Thanks to these preparations, the world's first ammonia fueling operation was successfully and safely completed, marking a significant milestone in maritime fueling safety and environmental stewardship.

Building on the insights and achievements from the successful ammonia fueling operation, NYK is poised to lead the shipping industry in reducing environmental impact. By championing the adoption of next-generation fuels like ammonia, NYK aims to set new standards in maritime sustainability. This initiative underscores NYK's commitment to innovative solutions that mitigate carbon emissions and advance eco-friendly practices across its fleet operations. With a focus on pioneering sustainable fuel technologies, NYK continues to drive progress towards a cleaner and more sustainable future for global shipping, aligning with broader industry efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental stewardship.

Building on their mission of "Bringing value to life," the NYK Group unveiled their 2023 medium-term plan, "Sail Green, Drive Transformations 2026," prioritizing ESG (environmental, social, and governance) factors at the heart of their growth strategy. This plan aligns with their ambitious 2030 vision of transforming from a comprehensive logistics provider to a "co-creator of value" for the future. This vision will be pursued by strengthening their core business and fostering new ventures.

To further solidify their commitment to sustainability, the NYK Group launched the "NYK GREEN EARTH" brand. This initiative underscores their dedication to developing innovative low-carbon and decarbonization solutions through green businesses, including exploring next-generation fuel sources. Ultimately, the NYK Group aspires to become a prominent "sustainable solution provider" by actively promoting strong ESG management practices.
