Japanese shipping giant NYK and Astomos Energy Corporation, a leading LPG trader and importer, recently celebrated the delivery and naming ceremony of a cutting-edge LPG dual-fuel carrier designed to operate on both LPG and ammonia. This innovative vessel marks a significant advancement in sustainable shipping technology, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the maritime industry. NYK and Astomos' collaboration underscores their commitment to environmental stewardship and the adoption of cleaner energy solutions. The new carrier not only enhances operational efficiency but also sets a precedent for future developments in maritime transport that prioritize sustainability and eco-friendly practices.

On June 12, a naming ceremony took place at Kawasaki Heavy Industries Ltd.'s Sakaide Works for Gas Amethyst, a significant liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) carrier jointly owned by Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (“NYK”) and Astomos Energy Corporation (“Astomos Energy”). This event marked the vessel's christening as "Gas Amethyst," following the earlier delivery of Gas Garnet in March. Gas Amethyst is the second LPG dual-fuel vessel jointly delivered this year and the fourth for Astomos Energy.

The ceremony was attended by about 80 guests, including representatives from Astomos Energy, Idemitsu Kosan Co., Ltd. (“Idemitsu Kosan”), and Mitsubishi Corporation. Kenya Maeda, Managing Executive Officer of Idemitsu Kosan, officiated the christening, while NYK's Managing Executive Officer Hironobu Watanabe and others joined to extend a warm welcome to the vessel and wish for its safe voyages.

The Gas Amethyst features a dual-fuel engine capable of utilizing both heavy oil and LPG, alongside a shaft generator that generates electricity through the main engine's propeller shaft. This setup allows the vessel to minimize diesel generator use during standard operations, facilitating full navigation on LPG. Compared to traditional heavy oil-powered ships, emissions of SOx and CO2 are reduced by over 95% and 20% respectively when operating on LPG.

Additionally, the vessel is adaptable for transporting ammonia, responding to potential future demand for this environmentally significant fuel. Ammonia is increasingly recognized for its role in achieving a carbon-neutral economy.

NYK aims to strengthen its partnership with Astomos Energy, enhancing sustainable fleet development and contributing to a greener supply chain.

The Gas Amethyst is characterized by its impressive dimensions, measuring 229.90 meters in length overall, with a breadth spanning 37.20 meters and a depth of 21.90 meters. Its substantial summer draft of 11.65 meters ensures efficient navigation capabilities, complemented by a vast tank capacity totaling 86,953 cubic meters. These specifications underscore the vessel's capacity for extensive cargo transportation, emphasizing its role in maritime logistics and trade. The combination of size and storage capacity positions the Gas Amethyst as a formidable player in the shipping industry, capable of meeting diverse transportation needs efficiently and reliably.
