NOVATEK has recently obtained Russian patents for two significant innovations in the realm of sustainable energy – a large-scale low-carbon ammonia process and a large-scale pure hydrogen process, both hinging on the breakthrough technology of ammonia cracking.

The low-carbon ammonia process, a collaborative effort between NOVATEK and Russian design institutes, centres around the steam reforming of natural gas. This patented process design showcases the capability to achieve low-carbon ammonia production at a remarkable scale, exceeding 1 million metric tons per annum per process train. More impressively, it manages to significantly curtail carbon emissions by incorporating energy-efficient solutions and achieving a remarkable 90% or more carbon capture and geological storage. This not only positions NOVATEK as a pioneer in sustainable ammonia production but also underscores its commitment to reducing environmental impact.

In parallel, NOVATEK's achievement in the large-scale ammonia cracking process marks a crucial advancement in the broader ambition of establishing a value chain that can efficiently deliver pure hydrogen to end consumers at a competitive and affordable price. This innovative process signifies a pivotal stride towards making hydrogen a viable and accessible energy source, contributing to the ongoing global efforts to transition towards cleaner and more sustainable energy solutions.

It's essential to note that PAO NOVATEK stands as the largest independent natural gas producer in Russia, playing a pivotal role in the country's energy landscape. The company made a strategic foray into the global liquefied natural gas (LNG) market in 2017 with the successful initiation of the Yamal LNG project. Since its establishment in 1994, NOVATEK has been actively involved in the exploration, production, processing, and marketing of natural gas and liquid hydrocarbons.

The geographic focus of NOVATEK's upstream activities primarily centres around the Yamal-Nenets Autonomous Region, a region globally renowned as the largest natural gas-producing area. This area alone contributes approximately 80% of Russia's natural gas production and a substantial 15% of the world's total gas production. NOVATEK's significant role in this prolific region positions it as a key player not only in the Russian energy sector but also on the global stage.

As a public joint-stock company operating under the laws of the Russian Federation, NOVATEK's pursuit of innovative and sustainable technologies aligns with the evolving landscape of the energy industry. The recent patents for the low-carbon ammonia process and large-scale ammonia cracking process underscore NOVATEK's commitment to pushing the boundaries of technology for the greater good of the environment.

By developing and securing patents for these groundbreaking processes, NOVATEK is not merely asserting its technological prowess but also actively contributing to the global discourse on sustainable energy. The potential for large-scale, low-carbon ammonia production and efficient ammonia cracking positions NOVATEK as a leader in the race towards a more sustainable and environmentally friendly energy future.
