Norsk e-Fuel, Prime Capital, and RES have announced a groundbreaking collaboration to develop "Project Alby," a large-scale sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) production facility in Ånge, Sweden.
Project Alby, located approximately 370 km north of Stockholm, aims to produce a minimum of 80,000 tons of e-Fuel annually. The 14-hectare site in Ånge provides ample space for large-scale e-Fuel production and offers strategic advantages through synergies with existing industrial partners.
This ambitious undertaking leverages the region's abundant renewable energy resources. The project also represents Norsk e-Fuel's first venture into Sweden, expanding its footprint across the Nordics following previously announced projects in Norway and Finland.
Norsk e-Fuel brings its deep expertise in e-Fuel technology and project development, while Prime Capital contributes its extensive experience in renewable energy infrastructure investment and power-to-x projects. RES, a leading renewable energy company, adds its vast project development capabilities and a proven track record in delivering large-scale renewable energy projects. Prime Capital's recent acquisition of the Ånge site, pre-developed by RES, has paved the way for this strategic collaboration.
The facility will utilize the Power-to-Liquid (PtL) process, a technology that converts water into hydrogen through electrolysis powered by renewable electricity. This hydrogen is then combined with captured CO2 to produce synthetic e-Kerosene, a drop-in replacement for conventional jet fuel. This innovative approach offers a sustainable pathway to decarbonize air travel, a sector currently heavily reliant on fossil fuels.
"We are thrilled to join forces with Norsk e-Fuel on this transformative project," said Jens Walzner, Managing Director of Prime Capital. "This collaboration unites Norsk e-Fuel's cutting-edge advancements in synthetic SAF development, RES's exceptional project delivery capabilities, and Prime Capital's deep experience in renewable energy infrastructure. Project Alby is a crucial step in reducing aviation emissions and accelerating Sweden’s transition to a more sustainable future."
Matilda Afzelius, CEO of RES in the Nordics, emphasized the project's significance for the region. "Norsk e-Fuel joining the Alby project is fantastic news. Their expertise in e-SAF production, combined with Prime Capital’s strategic capabilities and RES’s 40+ years of renewable energy experience, provides a robust foundation for the next development phase. This partnership strengthens our ability to drive the green transition forward, and we are excited to do so alongside the best in the industry,” she said
The project is expected to align with the European regulation on sustainable aviation fuel (ReFuelEU Aviation) and is anticipated to commence operations following further development and construction.
