NitroVolt, a Danish startup pioneering green ammonia technology, has successfully raised €3.5 million ($3.69 million) in a seed funding round. This investment will fuel the company’s mission to revolutionize ammonia production by shifting it from centralized, fossil fuel-intensive processes to decentralized, renewable energy-powered solutions.

Ammonia, a critical component in global food production, is currently manufactured through energy-intensive processes that contribute significantly to greenhouse gas emissions. NitroVolt aims to address this challenge with its innovative “Nitrolyzer” system. This compact, container-sized unit leverages renewable electricity to directly synthesize ammonia from air, water, and renewable energy, eliminating the need for fossil fuels.

By decentralizing ammonia production, NitroVolt seeks to reduce carbon emissions and enhance supply chain resilience. The company’s technology enables farmers to produce their own green ammonia on-site, minimizing transportation costs and risks associated with centralized production facilities.

“Our ambition is to make a substantial and lasting positive impact on the environment and society,” said Suzanne Zamany Andersen, Ph.D., CEO of NitroVolt. “By providing small, modular units, we can rapidly implement a green solution and address the urgent climate crisis. We are excited about the potential to alleviate global hunger by ensuring access to nitrogen fertilizer in vulnerable regions.”

Strong Investor Support

The seed funding round was led by BackingMinds, a Swedish early-stage venture capital firm. Other notable investors include Denmark’s sovereign wealth fund EIFO, as well as climate-focused funds EQT Foundation, Satgana, and DivisionM.

Lasse Truels Köhler, Investment Manager for Green Investments at EIFO, expressed enthusiasm for NitroVolt’s vision and said, “Industrial ammonia production has been a cornerstone of global food security for over a century. However, traditional methods have a significant environmental impact. We at EIFO are thrilled to support NitroVolt’s journey to usher in a greener era of ammonia production, directly on farms worldwide.”

With the secured funding, NitroVolt plans to accelerate the development and deployment of its Nitrolyzer system. The company will focus on building a demonstration unit to validate its technology in real-world farming conditions. Additionally, NitroVolt aims to establish strategic partnerships to scale its solution and drive global adoption of sustainable ammonia production.
