Nikola Corporation, a global leader in zero-emission transportation and energy infrastructure, has established a strategic partnership with ITD Industries to inaugurate Ontario's inaugural commercial hydrogen refueling station for heavy-duty vehicles under the HYLA brand. Strategically positioned at ITD Industries' Etobicoke headquarters, in close proximity to major transportation arteries such as Highways 401, 427, and the QEW, this infrastructure development marks a pivotal moment in the province's transition to clean energy transportation. The station's prime location underscores its role as a catalyst for the adoption of hydrogen fuel cell electric vehicles within the heavy-duty transportation sector.
Notable guests at the special launch event included Hon. Doug Ford, Premier of Ontario, Hon. Sam Oosterhoff, Associate Minister of Energy-Intensive Industries of Ontario, and other provincial and federal dignitaries. Also in attendance were prominent business leaders from the energy, retail, and transportation sectors, including representatives from Walmart Canada, Canadian Tire, and Loblaws.
The inauguration of this station marks a pivotal moment for Nikola and ITD Energy, a subsidiary of ITD Industries, which holds the distinction of being the inaugural Canadian dealer within Nikola's sales and service network. The station features a state-of-the-art 700-bar pressure-fill system, enabling hydrogen fuel to be dispensed into onboard storage for long-range vehicles like the Nikola hydrogen fuel cell electric Class 8 truck. This high-pressure system allows for quick and efficient refueling, supporting the deployment of zero-emission heavy-duty trucks.
Steve Girsky, CEO of Nikola, expressed his excitement about the realization of a hydrogen-powered future with the inauguration of a new refueling station in the Greater Toronto area. He highlighted the collaboration with ITD Industries as a key aspect of this advancement, noting that the partnership goes beyond supplying trucks to include essential fueling solutions. Girsky views this station as a major step forward in Nikola’s mission to establish a robust hydrogen infrastructure across North America, underscoring its role in supporting the entire hydrogen ecosystem and contributing to the broader goal of sustainable transportation.
Premier Doug Ford congratulated Nikola Corporation and ITD Industries on the completion of Ontario’s first commercial hydrogen refueling station dedicated to heavy-duty transportation. He highlighted this achievement as a major advancement in their collaborative efforts with businesses, industry, and all levels of government to develop reliable, affordable, and clean energy solutions. This milestone underscores the province's commitment to fostering growth through innovative and sustainable energy infrastructure.
Nikola and ITD Industries are at the forefront of decarbonizing Canada's commercial transportation industry. In collaboration with key stakeholders, including the Canadian Hydrogen Association, and industry leaders such as Walmart Canada – a pioneer in hydrogen fuel cell electric truck adoption – the partnership is driving the transition to a zero-emission future for Ontario and the nation.
