Detroit Metropolitan Airport (DTW) will utilize sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) for the first time, thanks to Montana Renewables LLC, North America's top producer of SAF. Montana Renewables has successfully delivered an initial shipment of 7,000 gallons of SAF to the Buckeye Pipeline facility located in Dearborn, Michigan. This fuel will subsequently be transported to the airport through an existing pipeline network. The SAF produced and blended by Montana Renewables will be utilized by Delta Air Lines for its operations.

Bruce Fleming, the CEO of Montana Renewables, expressed enthusiasm about this development, stating, "Supplying the SAF to DTW marks another significant milestone in the decarbonization of air travel." This initiative not only introduces SAF to flights operating out of Detroit but also highlights the company's commitment to innovation in renewable fuel sources. The incorporation of camelina oil in the SAF blend is particularly noteworthy, as it represents a sustainable, non-food renewable resource. This choice provides an additional cash crop option for farmers, promoting agricultural diversity and sustainability.

The adoption of SAF at DTW is part of a broader movement toward reducing carbon emissions in the aviation sector. SAF is produced from renewable resources and can significantly lower the greenhouse gas emissions associated with traditional jet fuel. By enabling airlines to operate more sustainably, this initiative aligns with global efforts to combat climate change and promote environmental stewardship.

Montana Renewables' achievement in delivering SAF to Detroit is a pivotal step in advancing cleaner air travel and showcases the potential for renewable fuels to transform the aviation industry. As airlines increasingly seek to meet stringent environmental goals, the partnership between Montana Renewables and Delta Air Lines marks a significant advance in the commitment to sustainability in aviation. The successful implementation of SAF at DTW could pave the way for broader adoption across other airports, further enhancing the industry's journey toward a more sustainable future.
