Microsoft, a leading technology giant listed on NASDAQ under the ticker MSFT, has solidified its commitment to combat climate change by entering into another significant carbon removal agreement. The company has partnered with Grassroots Carbon, an organization specializing in nature-based soil carbon storage solutions, to obtain soil carbon removal drawdown credits.
These credits signify the additional carbon sequestered over a 30-year period, marking Microsoft's inaugural investment in carbon credits derived from regeneratively managed grasslands. The Grassroots Carbon team is a multidisciplinary group comprising soil scientists, ranchers, software engineers, and entrepreneurs with diverse backgrounds from prominent organizations such as Amazon, Shell, Expedia, and Stanford University.
A cornerstone of Grassroots Carbon's approach is the utilization of grazing management software called PastureMap to track and manage land management practices. PastureMap serves as a measurement, reporting, and verification (MRV) tool, incentivizing ranchers to transition to rotational grazing. This involves practices such as rotating cattle between paddocks more frequently, allowing grazed land to undergo cycles of growth, rest, and recovery.
Rotational grazing, facilitated by Grassroots Carbon, accelerates photosynthesis, capturing CO2 and drawing it deep into the soil.
