LyondellBasell (LYB), a recognized global leader in the chemical industry, has taken a bold step in its ongoing commitment to sustainability by announcing that its Dalian manufacturing facility in China will be powered entirely by renewable electricity in 2025. This significant development marks the Dalian site as the first LYB Advanced Polymer Solutions (APS) plant in Asia to operate on 100% renewable energy, showcasing the company’s dedication to reducing its environmental impact and supporting cleaner industrial practices.

Under a one-year agreement, the Dalian site will transition to a fully renewable power supply beginning in 2025. This shift is expected to result in a substantial reduction in greenhouse gas emissions—nearly 5,000 metric tons of carbon dioxide—within a single year. That’s comparable to removing approximately 1,000 passenger cars from the road annually, underscoring the meaningful environmental benefits of the initiative. The change supports the Chinese automotive sector’s broader push to minimize its product carbon footprint (PCF) and integrate more sustainable production techniques into its value chain.

“This achievement reflects our commitment to providing our customers with more sustainable solutions,” said Rolf van Beeck, Vice President of APS APAC & AfMEI at LyondellBasell. “As the demand for energy-efficient vehicles continues to grow, we are not only delivering high-performance materials but also actively partnering with our customers to drive a more sustainable future.”

The transition to renewable electricity is being made possible through China’s Green Electricity Transaction program, which allows industrial users to procure green power via instruments such as Green Electricity Certificates (GECs) and Green Electricity Consumption Certificates (GECCs). Notably, LYB was able to secure this renewable electricity at a cost lower than that of conventional, fossil-fuel-based energy. This demonstrates that environmental responsibility can go hand in hand with economic efficiency—an important message for industries looking to adopt greener operations without compromising on cost-effectiveness.

The renewable power that will drive the Dalian site’s operations is primarily derived from wind and solar photovoltaic sources, reinforcing LYB’s long-term vision of transitioning toward clean energy. While this current agreement is set for 2025, the company has indicated that future electricity sourcing decisions will be carefully assessed based on cost, availability, and alignment with the company’s strategic sustainability goals.

Established in 2015, LYB’s Dalian facility plays a vital role in the automotive manufacturing supply chain, providing advanced polymer materials used in components such as bumpers, instrument panels, structural supports, and body panels. By powering the site with 100% renewable energy, LyondellBasell is not only reducing its carbon footprint but also reinforcing its position as a forward-thinking partner to the automotive industry.

Through this initiative, LyondellBasell continues to demonstrate leadership in environmental stewardship, contributing to the global effort to create a more sustainable and energy-responsible future.
