Metso is introducing its integrated Copper Electrowinning (CuEW) Plant, a state-of-the-art solution designed to enhance safety, sustainability, and efficiency in the production of high-purity copper cathodes. This innovative, pre-engineered plant layout is designed to accommodate a wide range of capacities, offering both flexibility and scalability to meet the diverse needs of copper producers. According to Lauri Palmu, Senior Product Manager for Hydrometallurgy at Metso, "The integrated CuEW Plant produces high-purity cathodes with proven reliability and availability. It leverages modern, proven technologies, including advanced digital and automation solutions, as well as an acid mist capture system, to optimize production in a safe manner while minimizing environmental impact." He further notes, "When integrated with Metso's solvent extraction (SX) plants, the CuEW Plant ensures high-quality production and performance."

Electrowinning is a key process in the recovery of metals from concentrated solutions by applying electricity across electrodes submerged in an electrolyte solution. It is a common method for recovering base metals such as copper, zinc, nickel, and cobalt. Metso’s integrated CuEW Plant incorporates seamless integration with solvent extraction technology, electrowinning machines, and all associated equipment. The plant’s design features a compact, optimized layout that efficiently utilizes space, reducing the overall footprint while ensuring smooth operation.

One of the plant’s key innovations is its enhanced safety features, achieved through Metso’s fully automated Outotec® tankhouse products, which form the core components of the CuEW Plant. These products contribute to improved safety while streamlining operations. Additionally, the plant’s use of the DoubleContact busbar system further optimizes energy consumption and reduces operating and maintenance costs, ensuring cost-effective and environmentally friendly operations. By minimizing the need for cathode replacement, the integration of machines also helps to boost operational performance and reduce downtime.

Metso offers a comprehensive, one-stop solution for CuEW plant deliveries, providing all proprietary and essential equipment for cathode production. This cohesive approach ensures that copper producers receive a streamlined, fully integrated system. With decades of experience in delivering related equipment and processes, Metso’s expertise and long-standing track record ensure that its CuEW Plant is a reliable and effective solution for high-purity copper cathode production.

The CuEW Plant represents a significant step forward in copper production technology, offering an advanced and sustainable approach that meets the evolving needs of the industry. By combining cutting-edge technology with Metso’s extensive expertise, the CuEW Plant ensures optimal performance, safety, and environmental sustainability in copper cathode production.

Metso is a leader in sustainable technologies, offering comprehensive solutions and services for the global aggregates, minerals processing, and metals refining industries. By leveraging its product and process expertise, Metso helps customers enhance energy and water efficiency, boost productivity, and minimize environmental risks. The company is committed to driving positive change.
