A.P. Moller-Maersk is on the brink of unveiling a groundbreaking achievement in sustainable shipping, as it gears up to launch its first large vessel powered by methanol. This significant stride aligns with the company's ambitious goal of achieving zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2040.

The momentous launch is scheduled for February 9, 2024, and the vessel will embark on the AE7 string, connecting major ports in Europe and Asia, with its journey commencing from Ningbo, China. Crafted by Hyundai Heavy Industries (HHI) in South Korea, this container ship boasts a nominal capacity of 16,000 containers (TEU). Its propulsion system is equipped with a dual-fuel engine, offering versatility by running on conventional bunker fuel, biodiesel, or methanol.

Karsten Kildahl, Chief Commercial Officer of Maersk, emphasized the strategic significance of introducing the first large methanol-enabled ship on the vital Asia-Europe trade lane. This milestone not only symbolizes a technological advancement for Maersk but also plays a pivotal role in influencing clients' initiatives towards decarbonizing their supply chains.

In 2024, Maersk aims to expand its fleet of methanol-capable ships operating on various trade routes, amplifying its commitment to sustainable maritime practices.

Before its official deployment, the vessel is slated to receive its formal name at the shipyard in late January 2024. The first half of the same year will witness the introduction of additional sister vessels, with ceremonial namings scheduled for Yokohama, Japan, and Los Angeles, USA.

As part of its ongoing commitment to sustainable shipping, Maersk plans to take delivery of four more sister vessels in the latter half of 2024, further solidifying its position as a leader in eco-friendly maritime solutions.

The impending launch of this methanol-powered vessel marks a significant milestone, as it will be the second container ship globally to operate on green methanol. The pioneering vessel in this regard is the feeder ship Laura Maersk, which commenced operations in September of the preceding year.

Maersk's foray into methanol-powered shipping aligns with the broader industry trend towards sustainable and low-emission maritime solutions. This move not only showcases the company's commitment to environmental responsibility but also positions Maersk as a trailblazer in the transition towards cleaner and more efficient shipping practices.

A.P. Moller-Maersk's imminent launch of its first large methanol-enabled vessel marks a significant leap forward in the pursuit of sustainable and environmentally friendly shipping solutions. As the company works towards its ambitious emission reduction targets, this technological innovation sets the stage for a new era in maritime transportation, emphasizing the transformative power of alternative fuels in the shipping industry.
