Lummus Technology, a leading provider of process technologies and energy solutions, has secured a contract from Silleno LLP to supply an ethylene unit for Kazakhstan's inaugural polyethylene plant. This project marks a significant milestone as it represents the first polyethylene production facility in the Republic of Kazakhstan, underscoring Lummus Technology’s role in advancing the country’s petrochemical industry and contributing to its industrial growth.

Situated strategically within the National Industrial Petrochemical Technopark in the Atyrau Region, this plant is set to significantly impact Kazakhstan’s economic landscape. It will contribute to GDP growth, create employment opportunities throughout both the construction and operational phases, and stimulate ancillary business ventures within the local economy.

Lummus Technology's ethylene technology will be instrumental in the polyethylene production process at the new facility in Kazakhstan. The production will unfold in two primary stages: first, ethane will be converted into ethylene, and second, polyethylene will be synthesized directly from the ethylene produced.

Under this contract, Lummus will provide a comprehensive package that includes technology licensing, basic engineering, and training for the new plant. The plant is designed to convert ethane sourced from the Tengiz oil field into 1.3 million tons of ethylene annually. Additionally, Lummus will deploy its advanced Short Residence Time (SRT®) heaters and an efficient olefins recovery system. The SRT® heaters are engineered to enhance product yield, while the olefins recovery system reduces the required equipment footprint by up to 25 percent compared to traditional systems. This reduction not only boosts energy efficiency but also lowers capital expenditures and minimizes CO2 emissions.

Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, expressed pride in partnering with Silleno on a significant petrochemical project in Kazakhstan, emphasizing its role as a major investment and growth driver for the country. He noted that this project builds on Lummus Technology's recent successes in Kazakhstan, allowing them to leverage their expertise and cutting-edge technology to further advance the nation’s energy and petrochemical sectors. This collaboration not only reinforces their commitment to Kazakhstan's industrial development but also enhances their presence and impact in the region's growing market.

As a leading supplier of light olefins technologies, Lummus has a robust track record in the industry. Since 2000, the company has secured nearly 50 percent of new project awards and has licensed over 200 ethylene plants globally. This impressive portfolio represents approximately 45 percent of the world's total ethylene production capacity, underscoring Lummus' dominance and expertise in the field.

Lummus Technology specializes in licensing process technologies for clean fuels, renewables, petrochemicals, polymers, and gas processing, as well as offering supply chain services, catalysts, proprietary equipment, and digitalization solutions to customers worldwide. Lummus Technology's expertise and commitment to technological advancement are instrumental in enabling modern lifestyles and driving progress towards a more sustainable future.
