Lummus Technology, a leading global provider of process technologies and energy solutions, has announced a strategic partnership with Advanced Ionics, a company specializing in low-cost green hydrogen technology. This collaboration includes a significant investment from Lummus Venture Capital aimed at accelerating the commercialization of Advanced Ionics' hydrogen electrolyzer technology. The initiative seeks to bolster decarbonization efforts within the refining, gas processing, and petrochemical sectors.

As part of the partnership, Lummus will offer engineering services and supply proprietary equipment to enhance green hydrogen production capacity for both new projects and existing hydrogen users or producers. Leon de Bruyn, President and CEO of Lummus Technology, emphasized the company's history of supporting innovative technologies, stating, "Lummus has a proven track record of serving as a launchpad for innovative technologies. With Advanced Ionics, we will leverage this experience to develop and deploy cost-efficient solutions that advance green hydrogen production and help decarbonize key sectors of the downstream energy industry."

Chad Mason, CEO of Advanced Ionics, highlighted the significance of their water vapor electrolyzers in overcoming major barriers to expanding green hydrogen production, namely high capital costs and electricity demands. He remarked, "Our partnership with Lummus Technology—and their additional investment—marks a pivotal next step in accelerating the commercialization of technology, which was purpose-built for decarbonizing heavy industry."

Advanced Ionics’ innovative Symbion™ Electrolyzers leverage waste heat and affordable clean electricity, enabling them to consume up to 40% less electricity per kilogram of hydrogen produced compared to traditional alkaline and PEM technologies. The modular design of the system facilitates quick deployment and simplifies operation and maintenance, while the use of readily available components significantly lowers capital expenses.

Lummus has established itself as a global leader in hydrogen technology licensing, catering to the needs of refineries, petrochemicals, and various industrial gas applications. The company’s extensive portfolio includes advanced designs and technologies for blue hydrogen and synthesis gas plants, utilizing steam methane reforming and auto-thermal reforming methods with natural gas, liquefied petroleum gas, and naphtha as feedstocks.

This partnership between Lummus Technology and Advanced Ionics represents a significant step toward realizing the potential of green hydrogen in decarbonizing heavy industry. By combining their expertise and resources, the two companies aim to create efficient, scalable solutions that will drive the transition to a more sustainable energy future.

Lummus Technology is a global frontrunner in creating technology solutions that enable modern living while prioritizing a sustainable, low-carbon future. The company licenses its process technologies in clean fuels, renewables, petrochemicals, polymers, and gas processing, as well as providing lifecycle services, catalysts, proprietary equipment, and digital solutions to clients around the world.
