Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle to SDARI, a prominent Chinese design firm, for its innovative ammonia-propelled 8,200 TEU containership concept. This milestone achievement stems from a collaborative effort involving Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) and MAN Energy Solutions (MAN E&S) within a joint development project. The containership design incorporates a 73,000 cubic meter Type C tank ammonia containment system, featuring a unique configuration with a dome positioned inside its tank connection space. Furthermore, the design integrates the MAN 6G80-C10.5-LGIA Ammonia-Fueled Engine, equipped with a high-pressure selective catalytic reduction (HP-SCR) system to ensure compliance with Tier II/Tier III emissions standards.

Andy McKeran, LR's Chief Commercial Officer, remarked, "With increasing scrutiny on ammonia as a potential future fuel to mitigate maritime greenhouse gas emissions, this collaborative project involving LR, SDARI, MSC, and MAN E&S underscores the technical prowess and expertise of the partners in containership and ammonia fuel designs."

Mr. Li Xin, Vice Director of SDARI, expressed, "As a prominent ship designer within the maritime sector, SDARI has been committed to developing low-carbon solutions in collaboration with our trusted partners. This joint development project presents an exciting opportunity to provide a practical solution to the community, facilitating a substantial reduction in carbon emissions for the fleet and promoting sustainable and prosperous shipping practices. SDARI remains dedicated to delivering competitive designs and serving as a reliable partner to the industry in its pursuit of achieving net-zero emissions."

The approval in principle granted by Lloyd’s Register signifies a significant milestone in the advancement of environmentally sustainable shipping solutions. The collaboration between SDARI, MSC, and MAN E&S underscores the importance of partnership and collective innovation in addressing the maritime industry's decarbonization challenges. By leveraging cutting-edge technologies and expertise, the partners aim to pave the way for the widespread adoption of ammonia as a viable alternative fuel, contributing to the industry's transition toward a more sustainable and successful future.

In conclusion, the approval in principle granted to SDARI for its ammonia-propelled containership design represents a significant step forward in the pursuit of sustainable shipping solutions. This collaborative effort between SDARI, MSC, and MAN E&S demonstrates the industry's collective commitment to innovation and environmental stewardship. As the maritime sector continues to explore alternative fuels and propulsion technologies, partnerships and collaborative initiatives will play a crucial role in driving progress toward a greener and more sustainable future for global shipping.

For over two and a half centuries, Lloyd's Register has demonstrated unwavering curiosity in uncovering clients' challenges and collaborating to pinpoint optimal solutions. The company facilitates improved safety, technical expertise, operational efficiency, and business performance within the maritime sector, catering to clients worldwide.
