UK-based hydrogen marine technology company H2Terminals has formed a strategic partnership with the maritime insurer London P&I Club to create insurance solutions for green hydrogen shipping. The collaboration is formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU), with the goal of evaluating and developing specialized insurance products for the maritime transport of green hydrogen.
H2Terminals has ambitious plans to produce green hydrogen on floating barges located in the Thames Estuary, powered by electricity from an energy island situated approximately 100km offshore. The company intends to distribute the hydrogen to businesses along the Thames using liquid hydrogen carrier vessels, each capable of holding 50 tonnes of liquid hydrogen and powered by hydrogen itself.
The London P&I Club will focus on crafting tailored insurance solutions for H2Terminals' planned hydrogen-powered vessels, liquid hydrogen storage systems, and onboard fuel cells. Over the next 12 months, the partnership will assess the specific insurance needs of H2Terminals, evaluate the risks associated with green hydrogen marine transportation, and develop a customized insurance framework. Additionally, they will work to establish best practices for insuring bulk liquid hydrogen transport.
Gerry Wilkinson, CEO of H2Terminals, emphasized the significance of this partnership, calling it a “vital component” of the company’s service. He noted that combining H2Terminals' advanced hydrogen transportation technology with world-class marine insurance offers a comprehensive package that sets new benchmarks for safety and reliability in clean energy transport.
Ian Gooch, CEO of London P&I Club, highlighted the broader implications of the partnership, stating that it enables the extension of their involvement in green shipping and the provision of sustainable insurance solutions for groundbreaking technology.
This partnership builds on H2Terminals’ previous agreements, including a recent collaboration with Lloyd’s Register to explore its planned hydrogen transportation process.
H2Terminals is advancing a cutting-edge liquid hydrogen terminal in London, anchored on the Thames. The first phase of the project, scheduled for completion by the end of 2025, will have the capacity to receive and store 70,000 tons of liquid hydrogen annually.
