On May 1st, 2024, Linde revealed the signing of a long-term contract with H2 Green Steel to provide industrial gases for the world's inaugural large-scale green steel production facility.
Linde plans to invest around $150 million to construct, possess, and manage an on-site air separation unit (ASU) in Boden, located in northern Sweden. The company will deliver oxygen, nitrogen, and argon to H2 Green Steel's integrated facility, which will utilize state-of-the-art technology to slash carbon emissions by up to 95% in comparison to conventional steel production methods.
The anticipated commencement of Linde's new ASU is set for 2026, with plans to also provide atmospheric gases to Linde's current and prospective clients in the nearby merchant market.
"We are progressing rapidly on our mission to expedite the decarbonization of the steel sector with the establishment of our Boden plant. Air separation plays a crucial role in this endeavor, supplying gases essential for different phases of steel production," stated Maria Persson Gulda, Chief Technology Officer at H2 Green Steel. "Our advancements have been fueled by robust collaborations. Linde's technological expertise, coupled with its extensive operational knowledge on a global scale and in Sweden specifically, made them the ideal partner for us."
"Linde is dedicated to backing industrial decarbonization through top-tier projects that leverage our synergistic blend of assets, technology, and expertise," remarked Armando Botello, President of Regions UK & Ireland and Europe North at Linde. " Linde is proud to be part of H2 Green Steel's innovative venture, which also strengthens Linde's presence in a rapidly growing industrial zone."
In addition to supplying industrial gases, Linde Engineering has secured an engineering and procurement agreement for a HIPURE™ pressure swing adsorption unit at H2 Green Steel's Boden plant. This unit is designed to effectively capture and purify hydrogen from the top gas of the direct reduction iron furnace, reducing hydrogen losses and enhancing the overall efficiency of steel production.
Linde is a prominent global industrial gases and engineering enterprise, achieving $33 billion in sales in 2023. Serving diverse sectors such as chemicals & energy, food & beverage, electronics, healthcare, manufacturing, metals, and mining, Linde's industrial gases and technologies are integral to various applications.
