LG Chem is set to enter the global market with eco-friendly raw materials derived from vegetable oils, announcing plans to begin commercial production of bio-acrylic acid in the second quarter of this year. The company aims to produce up to 100 metric tons (MT) of prototypes annually, marking a significant step toward sustainable chemical solutions.

Bio-acrylic acid has diverse applications, including cosmetic ingredients, super absorbent polymers (SAP) for diapers, adhesives for electronics and vehicles, coating materials, and eco-friendly paints. Despite previous global efforts to develop bio-acrylic acid technology, LG Chem is the first to achieve commercialization.

The company’s bio-acrylic acid is derived from 3-Hydroxypropionic acid (3HP), produced through microbial fermentation of plant-based raw materials. Maintaining the same molecular structure and properties as conventional acrylic acid, this innovative product offers a 100% plant-based alternative. LG Chem developed its proprietary 3HP strain and fermentation technology in-house, earning the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Certified Biobased Product label last year.

With the initial production phase focused on prototypes, LG Chem will target sustainability-driven companies in North America and Europe. The cosmetics industry, with its growing demand for plant-based and naturally derived ingredients, is expected to be a key market. The company plans to operate a flexible production system to quickly respond to customer needs and is considering expanding facilities if demand rises.

“We expect bio-acrylic acid to be an innovative product that meets the sustainability needs of our customers and the market. We will continue leading the development of eco-friendly technologies,” said Song Byung-Keun, Senior Vice President and Head of Acrylates/SAP Business Unit at LG Chem.

By pioneering plant-based acrylic acid production, LG Chem is reinforcing its commitment to advancing sustainable solutions in the chemical industry.

LG Chem is a leading global chemical company with a broad business portfolio spanning petrochemicals, advanced materials, and life sciences. The company produces a diverse range of high-value products, including renewable plastics, cutting-edge battery and electronic materials, and pharmaceutical solutions such as drugs and vaccines. With a strong focus on delivering innovative and sustainable solutions, LG Chem plays a pivotal role in various industries, supporting global efforts toward a greener future.

As part of its long-term sustainability strategy, LG Chem is committed to achieving carbon-neutral growth by 2030 and net-zero emissions by 2050. The company actively addresses climate change by expanding its use of renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and ensuring responsible supply chain management. Through continuous investment in eco-friendly technologies, LG Chem is working to minimize its environmental impact while meeting the growing demand for sustainable materials worldwide.

Headquartered in Seoul, Korea, LG Chem operates multiple production and research sites across the globe. Its presence in key markets enables the company to drive innovation and maintain a competitive edge in the evolving chemical and materials sector. In 2024, LG Chem reported consolidated revenue of KRW 48.9 trillion (USD 33.6 billion), reflecting its strong market position and commitment to growth.

By combining technological expertise with sustainability-driven initiatives, LG Chem continues to shape the future of the chemical industry, paving the way for next-generation materials that support a more sustainable and responsible global economy.
