LG Chem is primed to accelerate the launch of a pivotal subsidiary focusing on battery materials, with plans to commence operations a month ahead of schedule. The precursor factory, a collaborative venture between Korea Precursor Corporation (KPC) – formed through a partnership between LG Chem and Korea Zinc's subsidiary Kemco – is slated for completion in March, surpassing the initial target of April. This expedited timeline is a response to recent developments, notably the US's enactment of the Inflation Reduction Act and the identification of "foreign entities of concern." These regulations mandate US-based customers to intensify their procurement of battery materials from non-Chinese sources.

Situated in Ulsan, KPC's precursor factory is poised to initiate test production no later than April. Utilizing remnants and by-products from LG Energy Solution and Korea Zinc's battery production processes as primary feedstock, the facility aims to optimize the production of precursors essential for battery manufacturing.

Precursors play a pivotal role in battery production, comprising a mixture of nickel, cobalt, and other crucial metals utilized in cathode composition. KPC anticipates embarking on the process of securing customer approval for its precursor products, a procedural undertaking that typically spans approximately a year.
