The Korea Institute of Energy Technology (KIER) and Samsung Heavy Industries have announced a strategic partnership to drive the development and commercialization of green ammonia fuel for the shipping industry. The announcement came on November 13 of a collaboration that aims to address the pressing need for carbon-neutral solutions and comply with the International Maritime Organization's (IMO) stringent regulations on greenhouse gas emissions.

Ammonia, a carbon-free fuel, has emerged as a promising alternative to traditional fossil fuels due to its high energy density and ease of transportation and storage. By combusting without releasing carbon dioxide, ammonia offers a significant opportunity to reduce the shipping industry's environmental impact.

Through this partnership, KIER and Samsung Heavy Industries will work together to Reduce Green Ammonia Production Costs. The two organizations will jointly develop innovative technologies to lower the production costs of green ammonia, making it a more economically viable fuel option. KIER will leverage its expertise in ammonia synthesis to develop multiple technologies that enable the safe handling and utilization of this toxic substance, ensuring the safety of crew and operations.

Samsung Heavy Industries will play a crucial role in demonstrating the practical application of green ammonia fuel in the shipping industry. By integrating this technology into ship designs and operations, the company aims to drive its commercialization and adoption.

KIER has made significant strides in ammonia synthesis technology. It recently achieved the successful synthesis of liquid ammonia at low pressures (below 50 bars) and low temperatures (below 400 degrees Celsius). This breakthrough positions Korea at the forefront of green ammonia production.

Talking about the initiative, Lee Chang-geun, Head of KIER said that, "Low-cost clean ammonia production and safety utilization technology are essential to meet the IMO's stringent regulations. This collaboration with Samsung Heavy Industries will lay the foundation for a new era of carbon-neutral shipping."

Lee Dong-yeon, Head of Samsung Heavy Industries Research Institute too agreed with the statement and said, "Samsung Heavy Industries is committed to building a value chain of eco-friendly energy and decarbonization solutions. By leveraging our technological capabilities, we will contribute to a more sustainable future."

This strategic partnership between KIER and Samsung Heavy Industries signifies a major step forward in the development and in the adoption of green ammonia as a clean and efficient fuel for the shipping industry. By combining their expertise and resources, the two organizations aim to accelerate the transition to a low-carbon future.
