KBR, a global leader in ammonia technology, announced that it has secured a conceptual study contract from Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) to explore floating blue ammonia production. SHI, one of the largest shipbuilders globally, is expanding into the ocean energy sector, with a focus on innovative maritime technologies. The study will combine KBR's advanced blue ammonia production technology, optimized for offshore environments, with SHI's extensive experience in designing large floating vessels.

Jay Ibrahim, KBR President of Sustainable Technology Solutions, expressed pride in partnering with SHI on this groundbreaking project. "We are proud to collaborate with SHI for this strategic project and provide our low-carbon blue ammonia process technology solution to develop this first-of-its-kind floating ammonia production facility," Ibrahim stated. He emphasized that the concept would offer a sustainable platform, enabling clients to achieve their energy transition goals with increased flexibility.

KBR's role in the study highlights its decades-long leadership in ammonia technology. Since 1943, the company has been at the forefront of the ammonia industry, having licensed, engineered, or constructed more than 260 grassroots ammonia plants worldwide. Their expertise positions them as a key player in developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the global energy market.

This collaboration marks a significant step in SHI's diversification strategy within the maritime and ocean energy sectors. As the demand for low-carbon energy sources rises, blue ammonia is gaining attention for its potential to reduce carbon emissions in industrial applications, including shipping and power generation. KBR’s proven blue ammonia technology involves producing ammonia from natural gas while capturing and storing the associated carbon dioxide, making it a critical component of the global energy transition.

By combining SHI’s expertise in mega floating structures with KBR’s ammonia process innovations, the study aims to pioneer a floating ammonia production facility, which would be the first of its kind. This project is expected to play a vital role in meeting global decarbonization goals and offering flexible solutions for sustainable energy production at sea.

Through this partnership, both companies aim to drive forward innovative technologies that address the urgent need for cleaner energy while supporting long-term environmental objectives.

KBR provides science, technology, and engineering solutions to governments and businesses globally. With a workforce of around 36,000 employees, KBR serves customers in over 80 countries and operates in more than 30. The company takes pride in partnering with clients worldwide to deliver advanced technology, value-added services, and long-term operations and maintenance support, ensuring reliable performance and predictable outcomes.
