On August 6, 2024, KBR (NYSE: KBR) announced that Avina Clean Hydrogen Inc. has chosen the PureSAFSM technology for its sustainable aviation fuel project in the US. Developed by Swedish Biofuels, the PureSAF technology is exclusively licensed by KBR on a global scale.

As part of the contract, KBR will supply technology licensing, proprietary engineering design, and front-end engineering design (FEED) for Avina's facility, which aims to produce 120 million gallons of sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) annually.

"PureSAF is a cutting-edge technology that produces jet fuel compatible with conventional jet fuel from various feedstocks at a low cost and on an industrial scale," said Angelica Hull, Managing Director of Swedish Biofuels. "Our technology not only processes ethanol but also converts mixed alcohols, carbon dioxide, and synthesis gas into SAF, offering pathways to utilize captured carbon for a cleaner, more sustainable future."

“We are thrilled to deepen our collaboration with Avina as it enters the SAF market,” said Jay Ibrahim, KBR President of Sustainable Technology Solutions. “In 2023, Avina chose KBR’s K-GreeN® technology for its green ammonia project in the US. Avina’s leadership in energy transition projects aligns perfectly with KBR’s dedication to deploying decarbonization technologies to further ESG goals. Together with Swedish Biofuels, we are excited to support Avina in expanding into other promising sustainable growth sectors.”

“We are pleased to choose KBR’s innovative aviation fuel technology for our ethanol-to-sustainable jet fuel project in Illinois,” said Vishal Shah, CEO of Avina Clean Hydrogen. “The economic benefits, low carbon intensity, and environmental advantages of PureSAF make it the ideal choice among available technologies.”

KBR continues to lead the way in pioneering decarbonization efforts by consistently innovating processes and utilizing low-carbon technologies to effectively cut emissions. In 2024, KBR marks a century of providing clean fuel solutions.
