Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX), in collaboration with Indonesia's national energy company PT Pertamina (Persero), PT Pertamina EP (PEP), and the Japan Organization for Metals and Energy Security (JOGMEC), initiated an inter-well CO2 injection test at the Sukowati oil field in East Java Province, Indonesia, on October 8, 2024. This test is part of a Joint Study Agreement signed in August 2024 between these organizations. The goal is to conduct CO2 injection across multiple wells at Sukowati to evaluate the effectiveness of CO2-EOR (Enhanced Oil Recovery) and CO2 sequestration.

For JAPEX, this test is an extension of the CO2 injection efforts that began at Sukowati last year. It is a significant step toward advancing technologies like CCS (Carbon Capture and Storage) and CCUS (Carbon Capture, Utilization, and Storage) in Indonesia. The ultimate aim is to support the country’s carbon-neutral ambitions while also working towards the commercialization of CO2 injection and storage technologies.

This initiative aligns with JAPEX’s broader "JAPEX2050" strategy, which focuses on contributing to a carbon-neutral society. Central to this strategy is the development of technologies and projects that help achieve net-zero emissions, particularly through CO2 injection and storage. The CO2 injection test at Sukowati plays a key role in demonstrating the viability of these solutions in enhancing oil recovery and permanently storing CO2 underground, thus addressing both energy production and carbon reduction goals.

Looking ahead, JAPEX remains committed to growing as a "comprehensive energy company" by addressing the evolving needs of the energy landscape and advancing its efforts in carbon neutrality. The company is not only focused on enhancing its corporate value but also on contributing to global climate goals by pursuing sustainable solutions in Japan and abroad. Through its participation in this test and other initiatives, JAPEX aims to help develop and commercialize technologies that can significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, both in Indonesia and globally.

By continuing to collaborate with partners like Pertamina, PEP, and JOGMEC, JAPEX hopes to build on this test's results to pave the way for more extensive carbon capture and storage projects. This collaboration exemplifies the shared commitment to tackling climate change while supporting energy security and economic development. As the world moves toward cleaner energy sources, JAPEX is positioning itself at the forefront of efforts to reduce carbon emissions and promote sustainable energy practices.

Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX), established on April 1, 1970, is headquartered at SAPIA Tower in Marunouchi, Chiyoda-ku, Tokyo. With a consolidated workforce of 1,641 employees and 979 non-consolidated as of March 31, 2024, the company is a key player in the exploration, development, production, and sale of oil, natural gas, and other energy resources. JAPEX also provides drilling-related services and is actively involved in the development of renewable energy sources such as solar, wind, geothermal, and biomass, along with the supply of electric power. The company's capital stands at 14.29 billion JPY.
