Jacobs has been selected by Cadent Gas, on behalf of Capital Hydrogen, to undertake the Pre-Front End Engineering Design (Pre-FEED) phase for the East London Hydrogen Pipeline (ELHP) project. This significant pipeline will extend 56 miles (90 kilometers) across East London, north of the River Thames, connecting major industrial areas to a reliable hydrogen supply. The ELHP project is vital for decarbonizing critical sectors such as transportation and power generation, contributing to the broader energy transition efforts at both regional and global levels.

Jacobs will draw on its extensive experience in energy transformation to deliver the Pre-FEED design, cost analysis, strategic planning, environmental assessments, and stakeholder engagement services. These comprehensive efforts will lay the groundwork for the project’s future success while supporting the U.K.’s net-zero targets. The initiative seeks to establish a hydrogen network that lowers carbon emissions in a region that has traditionally depended on carbon-intensive energy sources.

The ELHP is a key component of Capital Hydrogen's overall strategy to convert gas pipeline networks in London for hydrogen utilization. This project is expected to generate skilled job opportunities, enhance energy independence, and provide consumers with more choices. Capital Hydrogen is a joint initiative involving Cadent, SGN, and National Grid Gas Transmission.

Jacobs Vice President James Nash emphasized the importance of collaboration, stating, “Our hydrogen teams work together across geographies and sectors to transform innovative ideas into intelligent solutions, fostering a cleaner energy future for all.” He noted that this project builds on Jacobs’ long-standing partnership with Cadent, enhancing the vital decarbonization efforts in East London to benefit the local community and industries.

Cadent’s Strategy Director Angela Needle highlighted the project’s role in securing a reliable hydrogen supply along the north bank of the River Thames. She stated, “By ensuring a secure and reliable supply of hydrogen, we’re not only supporting the transition to a net-zero future but also helping to ensure the long-term viability of major employers, safeguarding and creating jobs while driving economic growth in the region.”

After the Pre-FEED phase, the project will transition to the full Front End Engineering Design (FEED) phase, during which the final engineering designs will be developed in anticipation of construction. Jacobs remains actively engaged with clients across various sectors on energy transition initiatives, transforming energy challenges into growth opportunities. Their ongoing projects include the Pre-FEED for Project Union for the U.K. National Gas, a Long-Duration Underwater Energy Storage Pilot for BaroMar, and serving as program manager for the ARCHES Hydrogen Hub. This project further enhances Jacobs’ expanding portfolio in energy transition solutions.
