UK-based electrolyzer manufacturer ITM Power has secured a contract with an undisclosed European energy company to co-develop a standardized design configuration for a 10 MW green hydrogen production plant. The plant’s design will integrate two of ITM’s NEPTUNE V plug-and-play 5 MW containerized electrolyzer systems, which incorporate self-pressurizing 30-bar TRIDENT stacks. NEPTUNE V is recognized for its cost efficiency and reliability, making it a competitive solution for large-scale hydrogen production.
According to ITM, the customer intends to implement this plant design across multiple hydrogen projects in the UK. The agreement is expected to accelerate hydrogen deployment and contribute to the UK’s growing hydrogen economy. ITM Power CEO Dennis Schulz commented, “This agreement with yet another large-scale European energy company further cements NEPTUNE V as the clear leader in its class. The 10 MW configuration will allow our customer to deploy projects rapidly across the UK.”
This latest collaboration builds on ITM Power’s recent achievements in electrolyzer technology. In late 2024, the company reached a significant technical milestone by validating a 40% reduction in iridium loading while maintaining stack performance and longevity. The ability to reduce reliance on iridium, a rare and costly material, enhances the cost-effectiveness and sustainability of ITM’s hydrogen production technology.
Additionally, ITM is advancing the development of its next-generation stack platform, CHRONOS, which remains on track according to the company’s plans. CHRONOS is expected to incorporate several technological enhancements from ITM’s development roadmap, further optimizing the efficiency and scalability of its electrolyzers. ITM noted that the validation of multiple features will be completed as testing progresses, with many improvements also being implemented into the current TRIDENT stack platform.
“The step-change reduction in iridium loading will be the first to be triggered for adoption in both platforms,” ITM stated, emphasizing its commitment to continuous innovation.
Beyond technological advancements, ITM Power has been actively expanding its commercial partnerships. In 2024, the company secured a 500 MW capacity reservation agreement with an undisclosed global industrial customer, highlighting the growing demand for its electrolyzer solutions. Additionally, ITM was selected as the preferred supplier of PEM electrolyzers by the UK’s Hygen Energy for hydrogen projects across the UK and broader Europe.
On the international front, ITM Power has been strengthening its presence in key markets. In collaboration with Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, the company recently completed the delivery and installation of a NEPTUNE electrolyzer at Tokyo Gas’ Yokohama Techno Station. This project marks a significant milestone in ITM’s expansion into the Japanese hydrogen market.
With its ongoing technological progress and strategic partnerships, ITM Power continues to play a leading role in advancing green hydrogen production. By developing innovative electrolyzer solutions and securing key industry collaborations, the company remains at the forefront of the transition toward a sustainable energy future.
