INEOS has introduced a groundbreaking development in sustainable infrastructure, with the creation of the world's inaugural fully sustainable gas pipeline. The high-density polyethylene (HDPE) used for this pioneering project is bio-based and produced by INEOS, marking a significant milestone in the transition towards environmentally responsible infrastructure.

Installed by the French gas utility network operator GRDF, this revolutionary pipeline in Clermont Auvergne Métropole, located in the French city of Clermont-Ferrand, exemplifies a commitment to reducing carbon footprints in the region. Spanning one kilometer, the pipeline is part of GRDF's initiative to incorporate eco-friendly elements into its gas networks.

The pipeline's construction relies on bio-based, certified HDPE sourced from INEOS Olefins & Polymers Europe. This bio-based HDPE is crafted from wood processing residues derived from the paper industry, which undergo a transformative process into tall oil—a bio-naphtha. Subsequently, this tall oil is converted into bio-ethylene at INEOS Cologne and transported to INEOS' polymer plant in Lillo, Belgium. At this facility, it is utilized in the production of bio-based HDPE.

Notably, the resulting bio-polymer boasts a significantly lower carbon footprint compared to traditional fossil-based polymers. This distinction has earned recognition from the International Sustainability and Carbon Certification (ISCC), an independent third-party organization. ISCC has certified that the production process of the pipes installed by GRDF adheres to ISCC Plus standards, as it involves replacing fossil fuel-derived feedstocks with the innovative bio-material.

Despite its eco-friendly composition, the bio-polymer maintains equivalent technical characteristics to conventional polymers. This characteristic ensures that GRDF, as a key partner, can uphold the highest safety standards while concurrently reducing the environmental impact of the networks it manages on behalf of local authorities. Furthermore, the success of this endeavor opens the door for the replication of this innovative approach in the construction of other gas and water pipelines.

Emphasizing the significance of this achievement, INEOS extends its congratulations to GRDF for pioneering this world-first initiative. INEOS takes pride in its role as a contributor to this groundbreaking innovation. This endeavor aligns with the broader commitment of INEOS to collaborate with partners in developing efficient, lower-emission solutions for the transportation of essential utilities and goods within European cities. This achievement is not only a testament to the dedication of GRDF but also exemplifies the synergy between industry leaders committed to reducing emissions and promoting sustainability.

GRDF's success in distributing biomethane, a bio-based gas, using bio-based certified polyethylene pipes is noteworthy. This achievement is attributed to collaborations with partners such as INEOS, which demonstrated a strong determination to find solutions for decarbonizing the raw materials used in pipeline construction. The pioneering steps taken by both companies contribute significantly to the larger narrative of transitioning towards sustainable and eco-friendly infrastructure in the gas distribution sector.
