On October 10, 2024, INEOS Energy announced the launch of an electric-driven compressor at the Teesside Gas Processing Plant, which will significantly enhance gas flows from the Breagh Gas Field operated by INEOS. This new compressor represents a substantial investment aimed at ensuring a stable supply of domestic gas for UK households and industries in the years ahead, thereby helping to stabilize energy prices. Notably, electric-driven compressors produce a lower carbon footprint compared to their gas-powered counterparts, allowing Breagh to maintain its status as one of the UK's gas fields with the lowest carbon intensity.

David Bucknall, CEO of INEOS Energy, expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are delighted to see the electric compressor coming on stream at a critical time for UK gas demand. This project taps into valuable North Sea gas reserves with low carbon intensity, reflecting the type of investment essential for the energy transition and ensuring affordable energy security for the UK.”

The Breagh gas field, which has been under INEOS Energy's operation since receiving development consent in 2011, is situated in the Southern North Sea. The field features a 12-slot minimum facilities wellhead platform equipped with 11 production wells. Gas is transported through a 100-kilometer wet gas export pipeline to the beach, followed by an additional 11 kilometers of onshore pipeline leading to the Teesside Gas Processing Plant, which is owned by North Sea Midstream Partners (NSMP). This facility is responsible for processing the gas before it enters the National Transmission System (NTS).

Designed as a normally unattended installation, the Breagh field is recognized for its operational efficiency and environmental stewardship, boasting one of the lowest carbon intensities among gas fields in the UK. The introduction of the electric compressor is a strategic move to enhance production capacity while supporting the UK’s goals for sustainability and energy security. As gas demand continues to rise, the operational enhancements at Breagh will play a crucial role in meeting the needs of both consumers and industries, ensuring a reliable energy supply while adhering to environmentally responsible practices.

INEOS Energy is the energy branch of INEOS, a global chemical corporation engaged in various sectors such as petrochemicals, specialty chemicals, and oil and gas. Established in 2020, this division was created to manage the expanding portfolio of energy-related operations, encompassing both exploration and production, as well as the trading of oil and gas.

INEOS Energy’s exploration and production efforts concentrate on onshore and offshore oil and gas assets located in the North Sea, the United States, and Denmark. In recent years, the company has also invested in low-carbon technologies, including carbon capture and storage, as well as hydrogen initiatives.
