Indonesian President Joko Widodo has officially inaugurated two significant copper smelters aimed at bolstering the country’s position in the global mining landscape, according to the several media reports. One of these state-of-the-art facilities is operated by PT Amman Mineral International, representing a substantial investment of $1.4 billion (approximately Rp 21.26 trillion). Located in West Sumbawa Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province, this copper smelter and precious metal refinery boasts the capacity to process 900,000 tonnes of copper concentrate annually.

The PT Amman Mineral smelter utilizes advanced double flash cyclone technology to produce copper cathode as its primary output. In addition to copper, the facility is anticipated to generate significant by-products, including 18 tonnes of gold, 220,000 tonnes of copper cathodes, 55 tonnes of silver, and 850,000 tonnes of sulphuric acid each year. This innovative technology positions Indonesia to maximize its resources efficiently, marking a substantial step forward in the country's mining capabilities.

The second smelter, owned by PT Freeport, is situated in the Gresik Special Economic Zone (KEK) JIIPE in Gresik Regency, East Java Province. This facility represents a more substantial investment of Rp 56 trillion and is designed to process 1.7 million tonnes of copper concentrate sourced from Papua. Like the PT Amman Mineral facility, this smelter will also produce copper cathode, further enhancing Indonesia's output in this critical sector.

During the launch, President Widodo emphasized the necessity of advancing the downstream industry to meet Indonesia’s aspirations of becoming a developed and industrialized nation. He stated, “As the owner of the world’s seven largest copper reserves, we have entered a new chapter in the downstreaming of the copper industry, and we want to welcome becoming an advanced industrial country by processing its own natural resources.” This sentiment underscores the government’s vision of achieving self-sufficiency in processing natural resources and transforming Indonesia into a major player in the global market.

The establishment of these facilities aligns with Indonesia’s broader goals of reducing reliance on raw material exports while enhancing domestic processing capabilities. By investing in smelting and refining operations, the country aims to capture more value from its natural resources, fostering economic growth and technological advancement within the mining sector.

In conclusion, the launch of these two copper smelters marks a pivotal moment in Indonesia's mining industry, reflecting the government’s commitment to advancing the sector and maximizing the potential of its abundant mineral reserves. With significant investments and cutting-edge technology, Indonesia is poised to emerge as a formidable player in the global mining market, paving the way for a more sustainable and prosperous future.
