In a landmark move to expand its LNG fleet, GAIL (India) Ltd. has entered into a long-term time charter agreement with Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha, Ltd. (K-Line) for a state-of-the-art LNG carrier. The vessel, which will be built by Samsung Heavy Industries in Korea, is slated for delivery in 2027 and will significantly bolster GAIL’s capacity to meet India’s growing energy demands.
The new LNG carrier will feature a cutting-edge two-stroke engine and boast an impressive tank capacity of 174,000 cubic meters, marking a significant leap in GAIL’s fleet capabilities. This agreement represents the first-ever long-term charter arrangement between GAIL and K-Line for a newly constructed LNG vessel, underlining the growing partnership between the two companies in the energy sector.
GAIL, which currently operates four LNG carriers—GAIL Bhuwan, GAIL Urja, Grace Emilia, and Maran Gas Pericles—has been at the forefront of India’s efforts to ensure reliable natural gas imports to fuel the nation’s energy and industrial sectors. With the addition of this modern vessel, GAIL’s LNG fleet will play a crucial role in meeting both domestic and international demand for liquefied natural gas.
This strategic charter deal will help GAIL strengthen its logistical capabilities as the company continues to diversify its energy sourcing portfolio. The fleet will primarily transport LNG contracted on a Free on Board (FOB) basis from North America, further improving supply stability for GAIL’s customers in India and abroad. The upcoming LNG carrier is part of the company’s broader fleet expansion plans, with two new ships expected to join GAIL’s fleet in the next year.
The partnership with K-Line is particularly noteworthy due to the latter’s four-decade-long expertise in LNG transportation. Known for its reliable service and innovation, K-Line is poised to deliver a vessel that meets GAIL’s stringent operational standards while further enhancing the company’s capacity to navigate the evolving energy landscape.
GAIL’s decision to partner with K-Line also reflects its commitment to enhancing energy security for India, ensuring that the country remains resilient in the face of fluctuating global energy markets. With natural gas continuing to play an increasingly vital role in India’s energy transition, GAIL’s efforts to expand its fleet are aligned with the nation’s long-term energy strategy.
The deal also complements GAIL’s broader focus on diversifying its energy offerings, as evidenced by its recent re-engagement with INEOS to revitalize its Mangalore-based petrochemical plant.
In conclusion, this new long-term time charter deal with K-Line not only strengthens GAIL’s position in the global LNG market but also highlights its commitment to meeting India’s future energy needs with state-of-the-art infrastructure.
