Hy2gen Canada Inc., a subsidiary of the global renewable hydrogen producer Hy2gen, has marked a significant step forward in its ambitious COURANT project, submitting the project notice for its renewable ammonia production plant to Quebec's Minister of the Environment, Fighting Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks. This submission signals the culmination of the planning phase and paves the way for a comprehensive impact study, a crucial step towards construction.

The COURANT project, slated for construction in Baie-Comeau, aims to produce 230,000 tonnes of renewable ammonia annually, leveraging 307 MW of allocated electricity. The project is designed to play a pivotal role in decarbonizing the region's mining industry, utilizing the ammonia for ammonium nitrate production. Hy2gen anticipates the construction phase to commence in 2027, with renewable ammonia production targeted for 2030.

The impact study, to be defined by the Minister of the Environment, will rigorously assess the project's safety and environmental impact. Hy2gen expresses confidence in meeting these expectations, citing its extensive engagement with regional political and industry stakeholders since 2023. These discussions have encompassed regional government, municipal representatives, industry experts, and members of the local economic, environmental, and social communities.

Beyond its environmental benefits, the COURANT project is poised to be a significant economic driver. It is projected to generate up to 1,000 jobs during the construction phase and create approximately 300 permanent positions once operational.

Hy2gen emphasizes its commitment to positive social and environmental impacts. The company has maintained close communication with the Innus de Pessamit First Nation community throughout the planning process and seeks to develop partnerships that align with their values and priorities. To further facilitate transparent communication, Hy2gen will establish an office in Baie-Comeau, ensuring direct engagement with all local stakeholders.

Cyril Dufau-Sansot, CEO of Hy2gen, highlighted the project's significance, stating, "With the submission of the project notice to the Minister of the Environment, the Fight Against Climate Change, Wildlife and Parks of Quebec, our project COURANT has reached a significant milestone toward its realization. We have been welcomed with open arms and want to pay back on the trust we have received. Realizing renewable ammonia production here proves that we can confidently develop our ammonia projects in the Americas and Nordic countries. With those, we aim to supply Europe with renewable fuels. The demand for renewable ammonia is growing, and with a working logistics network it can be imported and used in the EU at lower costs than renewable ammonia produced in Europe."
