Huntsman Launches Avalon Gecko TPU to Elevate Footwear Grip

Huntsman has introduced a groundbreaking new line of thermoplastic polyurethane (TPU) materials designed specifically for the footwear industry. The AVALON GECKO TPU portfolio offers a range of exceptional products that deliver superior grip, durability, and circularity.

Tailored for high-performance soling applications, the series includes an extrudable grade capable of producing ultra-thin outsoles and a foam-based product that provides a remarkably soft and lightweight material with a distinctive feel. These innovative materials offer footwear manufacturers exciting new possibilities for creating innovative and sustainable footwear solutions.

Inspired by the remarkable grip of geckos, the AVALON GECKO TPU portfolio offers slip performance comparable to rubber in both wet and dry conditions. Ideal for outsoles in running, hiking, and safety shoes, this innovative portfolio features products that are soft (shore 60-65A) while also being highly durable with excellent abrasion resistance. This combination makes GECKO TPU a superior choice for footwear that demands both comfort and reliability in diverse environments.

To maximize design and production flexibility for its customers, Huntsman has introduced three distinct grades of AVALON GECKO TPU: AVALON 6044 AG, an opaque injectable grade perfect for safety shoes; AVALON 6053 AG, a transparent extrusion grade optimized for running applications; and AVALON 6055 AG, a transparent injectable grade offering exceptional wet slip performance. Each grade is tailored to meet specific application needs, ensuring that manufacturers can achieve the desired balance of performance and aesthetics in their footwear products.

The extrudable AVALON 6053 AG TPU marks a significant advancement in footwear, allowing for the production of outsoles that are up to 50% thinner and lighter than traditional options, without sacrificing quality, performance, or durability. The injectable AVALON 6044 AG grade is designed to enhance productivity with faster cycle times. Additionally, all AVALON GECKO TPU grades enable adhesive-free bonding with other TPU midsole materials and can be mechanically recycled with minimal impact on performance. These materials are also versatile, allowing for easy coloring and the creation of various textures and surface finishes.
