Highland Copper Company Inc. announced on March 4 that it has secured an updated air permit from the Michigan Department of Environment, Great Lakes, and Energy (EGLE) for its Copperwood Project in Michigan's Upper Peninsula. This approval, a crucial step in the project's progression, replaces the existing 2018 permit and introduces enhanced operational flexibility, particularly concerning power supply management.
The Copperwood Project, a key asset for Highland Copper, aims to tap into the rich copper deposits of the Upper Peninsula, contributing to the region's economic growth while adhering to environmental best practices. The updated air permit's approval represents a significant step forward in realizing this vision, ensuring that the project can proceed with a robust and sustainable operational framework.
The newly issued "Permit to Install" allows Highland Copper to supplement its primary electrical supply with on-site generators, ensuring a reliable and consistent energy strategy for the Copperwood mine. This addition is vital for maintaining uninterrupted operations, especially during periods of potential grid instability or peak demand. The ability to seamlessly integrate on-site power generation underscores the company's commitment to operational efficiency and resilience.
EGLE's decision follows a rigorous and transparent review process, which included a public comment period concluding on December 10, 2024, and a virtual public hearing held on October 30, 2024. The thorough consideration of public feedback by EGLE's Air Quality Division (AQD) highlights the state's dedication to balancing industrial development with environmental stewardship. The formal approval, granted on February 27, 2025, signifies the AQD's confidence in Highland Copper's adherence to stringent environmental regulations.
Barry O’Shea, CEO of Highland Copper, expressed his satisfaction with the permit approval, emphasizing the significance of this milestone. "We are pleased to receive this approval from EGLE, which reflects the thorough and fair regulatory review process in Michigan," O’Shea stated. "The issuance of this permit underscores that Copperwood has been designed to meet rigorous environmental standards and operate responsibly within the community. We appreciate the continued support from state authorities and the local community, whose engagement has been instrumental throughout this process.”
Highland Copper's commitment to environmental responsibility is evident in its proactive engagement with regulatory bodies and the community. The company's dedication to meeting and exceeding environmental standards reinforces its position as a responsible developer in the mining sector. By incorporating flexibility into its energy strategy, Highland Copper is demonstrating its ability to adapt to operational challenges while minimizing its environmental footprint.
