South Korean shipbuilding leader HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) recently received approvals in principle (AiP) from Lloyd’s Register (LR) and the Liberian International Ship & Corporate Registry (LISCR) for its advanced ammonia cargo operation and ammonia fuel supply systems, which are compatible with both ammonia and LPG. These approvals highlight HD KSOE's progress in developing sustainable maritime technologies that align with the International Maritime Organization’s (IMO) goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2050. Ammonia is gaining prominence as an alternative fuel due to its zero-carbon and zero-sulfur emissions, along with its ease of storage and transportation. These features make ammonia an appealing candidate for reducing emissions in the shipping industry. According to the International Energy Agency (IEA), ammonia could represent up to 46% of marine fuel by 2050, as its demand increases not only as a fuel but also as a hydrogen carrier, which is crucial for the transition to cleaner energy.

Kim Sung-Joon, CEO and Senior Executive Vice President of SD Business at HD KSOE, emphasized the importance of ammonia in long-term carbon neutrality goals, noting that the company aims to maintain its lead in the emerging ammonia fuel propulsion market through its technological advancements. Meanwhile, Jung Sik Kim, Managing Director of LISCR Korea, praised HD KSOE's contributions to the industry’s net-zero efforts. He stated that the development of ammonia cargo operation and ammonia fuel supply systems reinforces HD KSOE’s leadership in driving the maritime industry towards sustainable, low-emission practices. The Liberian Registry awarded two Approvals in Principle along with a Factual Statement to HD KSOE, in close collaboration with Lloyd’s Register. Kim congratulated HD KSOE for this achievement, expressing pride in their role in supporting HD KSOE's innovations.

Beyond ammonia-focused systems, HD KSOE is also exploring other low-emission fuel options. In partnership with Canadian ship design company Robert Allan, HD KSOE received another AiP from the American Bureau of Shipping (ABS) for a methanol dual-fuel (DF) hybrid propulsion system designed for an escort tug. The certification was awarded for the RAstar 3500-W escort tug model, part of a broader joint project between HD KSOE and Robert Allan that includes three types of tugboats designed to meet diverse operational requirements while reducing emissions.

This certification signifies HD KSOE’s commitment to creating sustainable shipbuilding solutions in response to the rising demand for eco-friendly vessels. The company is dedicated to advancing low-emission technologies that support the decarbonization of the maritime sector and aligns with broader global efforts to mitigate climate impact. By securing these approvals, HD KSOE continues to solidify its position as a pioneer in alternative marine fuels, contributing to the broader vision of sustainable global shipping.
