At SMM Hamburg 2024, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Amogy have announced a new partnership. HD KSOE, known for its eco-friendly propulsion systems, and Amogy, which specializes in ammonia-to-power solutions, will work together to improve ammonia-powered technologies for ships.

This collaboration aims to combine their expertise to create more sustainable and efficient solutions for the maritime industry. The goal is to advance the use of ammonia as a clean fuel, helping to reduce emissions and promote greener shipping practices.

In this partnership, HD Korea Shipbuilding & Offshore Engineering (HD KSOE) and Amogy will focus on combining their technologies to create a complete solution for the shipping industry.

HD KSOE’s eco-friendly propulsion systems, including electrical and control systems, will be integrated with Amogy’s ammonia-to-electric power system. This collaboration aims to help shipowners electrify their vessels more efficiently. The companies will work to ensure these systems work well together and explore additional ways to collaborate and find new business opportunities to support their mutual goals of advancing green shipping technologies.

Amogy’s ammonia-to-electrical power system provides a clean and efficient method for generating electricity by breaking down liquid ammonia into its basic components: hydrogen and nitrogen. This process, known as "cracking," involves heating the ammonia to separate it into hydrogen gas and nitrogen gas. The hydrogen is then fed into a fuel cell, where it reacts with oxygen to produce electricity. This reaction does not produce carbon dioxide or other harmful emissions, making it a highly sustainable energy source.

This technology is especially useful for industries like maritime shipping, where reducing carbon emissions is challenging, and it is also applicable for stationary power generation. By converting ammonia into clean electricity, Amogy’s system offers an effective solution for reducing environmental impact and supporting greener energy practices.

“PEM fuel cell will be one of the main power sources in the near future, especially for small and medium sized vessels. So we are pleased to have a powerful partner, Amogy,” says Jongkuk Park, COO of HD KSOE EcoPhin. “We will integrate Amogy’s system into our eco propulsion system from Power Generation to Propulsion and provide our customers with the most optimized solution.”

“We are thrilled to announce our partnership with HD KSOE EcoPhin,” says Seonghoon Woo, CEO of Amogy. “By integrating HD KSOE EcoPhin’s propulsion systems with Amogy’s innovative ammonia-powered core technology, we are poised to enhance the efficiency and sustainability of maritime energy systems. We look forward to the opportunities this collaboration will bring.”
