Grupa Azoty has successfully completed the unloading of an ammonia shipment from North Africa at its Mijanka port in Police, Poland. This strategic move is part of the company’s broader cost optimization efforts in response to rising in-house ammonia production costs. Given that producing one ton of ammonia requires at least 950 m³ of natural gas, increasing gas prices have significantly impacted production expenses.
To address this challenge, Grupa Azoty is leveraging its port infrastructure to secure ammonia imports, reducing dependency on domestic production. The Police facility houses Poland’s only ammonia transshipment terminal, which is continuously upgraded to meet current and future supply needs. This initiative is a key component of the company’s AZOTY BUSINESS Program, designed to enhance operational efficiency and cost management.
Strategic Shift Towards Ammonia Imports
The rising costs of ammonia production, driven by high natural gas prices and evolving climate policies, are prompting fertilizer manufacturers worldwide to explore cost-effective alternatives. Imports have emerged as a viable solution, enabling companies to mitigate both financial and environmental burdens.
Grupa Azoty recognizes this shift and aims to position itself as a major player in the European ammonia import market. By utilizing its advanced port infrastructure, the company not only ensures cost efficiency for its operations but also creates opportunities to supply ammonia to external buyers across the EU. This strategic expansion aligns with broader industry trends toward diversifying supply sources and reducing reliance on domestic production.
Developing a Logistics Hub for Ammonia Distribution
As part of its long-term vision, Grupa Azoty is integrating logistics within its Capital Group, prioritizing the efficient use of its port facilities. The Police port, with its well-developed infrastructure, is set to become a key logistics hub for ammonia distribution. Its multimodal transport access—encompassing sea, rail, and road networks—ensures seamless supply chain operations.
To further enhance capacity, the company is currently conducting conceptual work on expanding the ammonia terminal. Planned upgrades include the construction of new storage tanks and the expansion of railway infrastructure with dedicated loading stations. These enhancements will streamline ammonia distribution both within Grupa Azoty and to external industrial clients seeking a reliable ammonia supply.
Strengthening Grupa Azoty’s Market Position
As the largest ammonia producer in Poland and Central and Eastern Europe, Grupa Azoty plays a critical role in the region’s fertilizer industry. At the same time, it is also one of the biggest ammonia consumers, reinforcing its strategic importance in securing stable supply chains. By optimizing costs through ammonia imports and infrastructure development, the company is strengthening its competitive position while contributing to a more resilient European fertilizer market.
