TotalEnergies' ambitious project to convert the Grandpuits refinery into a zero-crude platform has entered a crucial phase, marked by the intense construction and installation of cutting-edge facilities. With over 1,200 workers on-site, the project is rapidly progressing towards its goal of establishing a sustainable, multi-energy hub.
The cornerstone of this transformation is the launch of France's first advanced plastics recycling unit employing pyrolysis technology. This innovative facility will have the capacity to produce 10,000 tons of pyrolysis oil annually, effectively turning plastic waste into valuable resources.
Simultaneously, the construction of a biorefinery dedicated to the production of Sustainable Aviation Fuels (SAF) is underway. Scheduled to commence operations in early 2026, this biorefinery will have a production capacity of up to 230,000 tons of SAF per year. This significant output will contribute to the decarbonization of the aviation sector, aligning with global efforts to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
The complexity of the construction process is notable, with a strong emphasis on reusing existing site equipment whenever possible. This approach not only minimizes waste but also leverages the accumulated knowledge and expertise of the Grandpuits workforce. The employees, intimately familiar with the site's infrastructure, are playing a pivotal role in ensuring the project's success.
In a strategic adjustment, TotalEnergies has decided to suspend certain projects initially planned for the second phase, specifically biogas and mechanical recycling. This decision allows for a focused allocation of resources and personnel to the critical first-phase projects, namely the advanced plastics recycling unit and the SAF biorefinery. Employees originally assigned to the suspended projects have been redeployed, with their consent, to support the ongoing construction efforts.
TotalEnergies has reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining 250 jobs at the Grandpuits site, as initially outlined in the 2020 project plans. This commitment underscores the company's dedication to supporting the local community and ensuring a just transition for its workforce.
The transformation of the Grandpuits refinery represents a significant step in TotalEnergies' broader strategy to transition towards a multi-energy company. The company aims to provide reliable, affordable, and sustainable energy to a growing global population. With operations in approximately 120 countries and a workforce exceeding 100,000 employees, TotalEnergies is placing sustainability at the core of its operations and projects. The Grandpuits conversion is a testament to this commitment, demonstrating the company's ability to innovate and adapt in the face of evolving energy demands and environmental challenges. This pioneering project sets a new standard for refinery transformations, paving the way for a more sustainable energy future.
