TotalEnergies has taken a significant step towards decarbonizing its European refineries by partnering with German energy developer RWE. Under this agreement, RWE will supply 30,000 tons of green hydrogen annually to the Leuna refinery in Germany for a 15-year period starting in 2030. This initiative aligns with TotalEnergies' goal to reduce its carbon footprint and enhance sustainability by the end of the decade.

The green hydrogen will be generated by a 300 MW electrolyzer, which RWE will build and operate in Lingen. To ensure consistent supply, the hydrogen will be stored locally before being transported via a 600 km pipeline directly to the Leuna refinery. This initiative is projected to reduce the refinery's CO2 emissions by approximately 300,000 tons per year starting in 2030, marking a major step in the facility's sustainability efforts. Notably, this agreement represents the largest contracted supply of green hydrogen from an electrolyzer in Germany to date.

Patrick Pouyanné, Chairman and CEO of TotalEnergies, highlighted the importance of this partnership. "We are pleased to expand our collaboration with RWE, a partner in several offshore wind projects across Germany and the Netherlands. This long-term green hydrogen contract is a crucial milestone in cutting CO2 emissions at our Leuna refinery. The successful implementation of this project will rely on the German authorities' completion of the H2 backbone pipeline and their proactive support for green hydrogen customers like our Leuna refinery," said Pouyanné.

Markus Krebber, CEO of RWE, emphasized the significance of this agreement as a positive step for advancing hydrogen adoption in the energy sector. "We are proud to have secured the first major long-term green hydrogen offtake agreement in Germany with TotalEnergies. Just six months after the decision to construct our 300 MW electrolyzer in Lingen, we've identified a key customer in TotalEnergies. This partnership demonstrates that hydrogen adoption can thrive with the right incentives and collaboration."

This collaboration stands as a major advancement in Germany's clean energy strategy, showcasing how strategic partnerships and innovative solutions can accelerate the transition to sustainable industrial processes. By investing in green hydrogen infrastructure, both TotalEnergies and RWE are playing a pivotal role in reducing carbon emissions while supporting the European Union's broader climate goals.

TotalEnergies is dedicated to minimizing the carbon footprint associated with producing, converting, and delivering energy to its customers. One of the key strategies identified by the company is utilizing low-carbon hydrogen to decarbonize its European refineries, a measure expected to cut CO2 emissions by approximately three million tons annually by 2030.

To achieve full decarbonization of the hydrogen used in its European refineries, TotalEnergies has already secured agreements for over 200,000 tons of green and renewable hydrogen per year. This supply will support its facilities in La Mède, Grandpuits, and Normandy in France, as well as in Leuna, Germany, and at its refineries in Antwerp, Belgium, and Zeeland, Netherlands. By implementing these initiatives, TotalEnergies continues to advance its commitment to sustainable energy practices and carbon reduction.
