Hamburg (Germany): During the first week of June 2024, Germany's Calcium Carbonate market demonstrated stable pricing trends amidst broader economic challenges. The price of industrial-grade Calcium Carbonate remained at USD 305 per metric ton (MT) CFR Hamburg, showing a marginal decline. This stability was driven by balanced supply and demand dynamics despite various external pressures, including a significant contraction in the construction sector and ongoing economic stagnation.

The supply of Calcium Carbonate in Germany remained stable due to consistent production from European manufacturers and slightly adjusted imports from neighboring countries such as Belgium and the Netherlands. This balance prevented price hikes despite minor fluctuations in supply and demand.

Several factors influenced this stability. Raw material costs, particularly limestone prices, experienced slight fluctuations, keeping production costs for European manufacturers steady. The German aggregates sector faced challenges due to ongoing stagnation in construction, exacerbated by the Russian-Ukrainian war, which disrupted energy supplies and led to a sharp rise in inflation. Despite these difficulties, the industry managed to overcome the worst consequences of the energy crisis, maintaining a moderate supply of Calcium Carbonate.

Notably, the downturn in Germany's construction industry, which began in 2022 and worsened in 2023, resulted in a 16.7% decline in building materials production, with some sectors experiencing declines of up to 40%. This created an oversupply of aggregates due to weak demand, potentially driving down prices. Companies like Holcim, a major player in the aggregates market, faced immense pressure but stayed afloat through involvement in infrastructure projects and the push for sustainable building solutions.

During this period, industrial demand for Calcium Carbonate remained steady across various sectors. Despite a forecasted 4% contraction in the German construction industry and a 12% decline in residential construction sales, Calcium Carbonate continued to be used in fillers, extenders, and cement production. The paper industry maintained stable production levels, ensuring consistent demand for Calcium Carbonate as a filler and coating material. Similarly, the plastics industry sustained its demand, using Calcium Carbonate as a filler and reinforcing agent.

Looking ahead, the pricing trend for Calcium Carbonate in Germany is expected to be influenced by several factors. June might see a decline in demand for Calcium Carbonate in construction applications due to unfavorable weather conditions and the completion of major projects before the summer break. Increased production by European facilities and higher imports from neighboring countries could result in a surplus of Calcium Carbonate.

In contrast, July is expected to experience increased demand due to peak construction activity in Europe and heightened activity in the paints and coatings industry for summer maintenance projects. Scheduled maintenance of Calcium Carbonate quarries in neighboring countries could temporarily reduce supply, exerting upward pressure on prices. However, an ease demand in Europe during August could decrease demand pressure across industries that utilize Calcium Carbonate, such as paper and plastics, while higher imports might increase supply, contributing to a potential price decline.
