The German Phosphonate prices have maintained stability in the first half of August, largely due to the ongoing summer holidays in the domestic and other European countries, which have led to eased industrial activities. Many manufacturing facilities across Europe, including those in the chemical industry, have scaled down operations. As a result, Phosphonate production levels decreased, particularly in sectors that are less critical or where demand is seasonally lower.
Currently, Germany is experiencing the summer season. Higher temperatures lead to increased water usage, particularly in cooling towers, HVAC systems, and irrigation, driving up the need for Phosphonate chemicals to prevent scale, corrosion, and microbial growth. However, procurement for newer supplies has decreased significantly. Also, in the downstream detergents manufacturing sector, steady Phosphonate usage continues though, the peak demand has begun to taper off slightly. Additionally, warmer weather allows for full-scale drilling and exploration activities, driving up the need for Phosphonate chemicals like drilling fluids, corrosion inhibitors, and production chemicals.
Companies have been focused on managing existing Phosphonate inventory levels rather than producing new stock. Practices of downsizing the Phosphonate inventories built up earlier in the year, particularly in anticipation of the holiday slowdown are on the go. While industrial demand for Phosphonate might have decreased in August, certain sectors, such as personal care products, maintained demand due to an increase in tourism and higher consumer spending on summer-related products. In the week ending on 16th August 2024, the assessed prices of Phosphonate ATM CFG Hamburg were USD 1150 per tonne.
Moreover, Germany's chemical industry saw a further decline in business climate in July. The chemical industry, is being swept up in the broader economic downturn, said an industry expert. Hopes for a demand recovery, including for Phosphonate, have not materialized. Demand for chemicals, including Phosphonate, continued to decline. Companies have scaled back Phosphonate production and are planning substantial staff reductions in the coming months. Capacity utilization dropped from 76.9% in April to 74.8% in July, well below the long-term average of 82%.
Furthermore, Germany's foreign trade is also expected to remain subdued for the foreseeable future, according to the Economy’s Ministry report. The recent data on exports of goods and services, including Phosphonate, are once again disappointing, and early indicators for German foreign business remain largely muted. The unexpected contraction of the German economy in the second quarter has reignited fears of a recession, highlighting ongoing challenges in the eurozone's largest economy. As an export-driven nation, Germany is significantly impacted by the economic downturn of China, one of the key markets for Phosphonate. In July, the government introduced an economic package aimed at revitalizing the sluggish economy, with projections suggesting it could boost growth by more than half a percentage point in 2025.
As per the ChemAnalyst pricing intelligence, the Phosphonate market is presumed to showcase resilience in the upcoming weeks as consumer demand is anticipated to support the prices.
