Switzerland-based shipping company Gearbulk has placed an order for two additional ammonia/methanol-ready open hatch newbuildings, each with a deadweight tonnage of 82,300, at the CSSC Huangpu Wenchong Longxue shipyard in Guangzhou, China. These new vessels will be sister ships to the four Pulpmax open hatch vessels Gearbulk ordered earlier this year and will feature identical technical specifications, including enhanced cargo crane capacities of 2×75 metric tons and 2×120 metric tons, as well as tween decks.
The new ships are scheduled for delivery in October 2028 and January 2029 and will be operated within G2 Ocean’s fleet. This latest order represents a significant step in Gearbulk's efforts to modernize its fleet with high-capacity, efficient vessels designed to support G2 Ocean’s operations.
Kristian Jebsen, Chairman and CEO of Gearbulk, highlighted the importance of this order: “This order signifies another milestone in our commitment to renewing our fleet with efficient, high-capacity vessels that cater to G2 Ocean’s customers.”
In addition to Gearbulk’s recent order, G2 Ocean has announced that its shareholder and pool partner, Grieg Maritime Group, will contribute four ammonia-ready vessels to its fleet by 2026. This addition will bring the total number of dual-fuel 82,300 dwt open hatch vessels in the fleet to ten. Arthur English, CEO of G2 Ocean, emphasized the impact of these vessels on the company’s service capabilities and its decarbonization goals. “The design of these vessels enhances our service offerings and helps us meet evolving customer demands. We greatly appreciate the support from Gearbulk and Grieg Maritime Group on these newbuilds,” English said. “With the ten Pulpmax vessels ordered, we are making significant progress toward our goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2050.”
The Pulpmax vessels feature 8 holds/hatches, four electro-hydraulic jib cranes with SWL capacities of 2×75 and 2×120 metric tonnes, and dedicated deck space for future alternative fuel tanks. With a length overall (LOA) of 225 meters and a beam of 36 meters, they are designed for versatility and efficiency.
Gearbulk is a global leader in the open hatch bulk shipping sector, managing a fleet of approximately 65 open hatch and specialized vessels. As a major player in this industry, Gearbulk’s fleet is commercially operated by G2 Ocean, in which Gearbulk holds a majority stake. This strategic operation enhances Gearbulk’s ability to deliver efficient and reliable bulk shipping services worldwide, reinforcing its position as a top player in the sector. The company’s extensive fleet and operational expertise contribute significantly to its competitive edge and its commitment to meeting diverse shipping needs across the global market.
