Gasum is partnering with Equinor for a series of liquefied biomethane (bio-LNG) bunkering operations at the Port of Dusavik, Stavanger. Gasum is supplying ISCC-EU certified mass balanced bio-LNG to Equinor’s chartered platform supply vessel, Island Crusader.

The initial delivery of bio-LNG was completed successfully in mid-July. Gasum will continue to provide the Island Crusader with 2–3 truckloads of bio-LNG approximately every two weeks, with each truckload containing around 22 tons of bio-LNG.

Both Gasum and Equinor are dedicated to achieving ambitious sustainability objectives to support a cleaner energy future. Equinor aims to become a net-zero emissions energy company by 2050, and the bio-LNG deliveries to the Island Crusader represent a significant step towards reaching this goal.

Biogas is a completely renewable and eco-friendly fuel, with life-cycle greenhouse gas emissions approximately 90% lower than those of fossil fuels. It can be utilized in the same applications as natural gas, including as fuel for road and maritime transport and as energy for industrial purposes.

The Island Crusader is also equipped with battery hybrid technology, enhancing its environmental performance even further.

Biogas production is a key component of the circular economy, as it utilizes waste feedstocks like biowaste, sewage sludge, manure, and other industrial and agricultural by-products. The organic matter left over from biogas production is rich in nutrients, which can be recycled for use in both industrial and agricultural applications.

Gasum is committed to sourcing more renewable gas to meet the growing demand for sustainable energy. The company aims to supply 7 TWh of renewable gas annually by 2027, encompassing biomethane and e-methane. Achieving this goal depends significantly on forging long-term partnerships with reliable and certified biogas producers across Europe.

Reaching this goal would result in a total carbon dioxide reduction of 1.8 million tons annually for Gasum’s customers.

Gasum can offer bio-LNG bunkering services to all shipping companies with vessels powered by liquefied natural gas, as LNG and bio-LNG are completely interchangeable and can be blended in any ratio.

Gasum is a leading expert in the Nordic gas sector and energy market. The company provides cleaner energy solutions and market expertise for industrial applications, combined heat and power production, and cleaner fuels for road and maritime transport. Gasum assists its customers in lowering their carbon footprint, as well as that of their clients. In collaboration with its partners, Gasum supports progress toward a carbon-neutral future both on land and at sea. The Gasum Group employs approximately 340 people across Finland, Norway, Sweden, and Germany, and reported a revenue of €1,457 million in 2023.
