Norwegian green hydrogen and ammonia producer Fuella has announced a major agreement with the Port of Pecém, located in the State of Ceará, Brazil, to develop a large-scale green ammonia production facility. The project, which was signed on October 28, 2024, will produce 400,000 tons of green ammonia annually for international export markets. This ambitious facility is set to become a significant player in the global low-carbon economy, with the potential to help meet rising demand for sustainable ammonia in sectors like agriculture, energy, and transportation.
The project is projected to involve an investment of approximately R$9 billion (around US$1.5 billion) and is expected to generate more than 1,000 new jobs, providing a much-needed boost to the local economy. Fuella chose Ceará for its favorable natural conditions, including abundant wind and solar power, as well as access to hydropower. These renewable resources are critical to producing green hydrogen, which is then used to create green ammonia. Green ammonia, produced using renewable energy, offers a cleaner alternative to conventional ammonia, which is typically derived from natural gas.
The strategic location of Pecém, with its existing infrastructure and proximity to the Port of Rotterdam—one of the world’s largest and most efficient ports—provides Fuella with crucial export capabilities. Rotterdam's role in the project will be pivotal in creating synergies for Fuella's operations, including access to advanced infrastructure such as export terminals, storage facilities, and logistical support. The Port of Rotterdam’s involvement also helps to solidify the project’s international appeal, as it opens up opportunities to supply green ammonia to Europe and other key markets around the world.
This project represents Fuella’s second major green ammonia initiative in Brazil, following the announcement of its first project earlier this year. In partnership with Porto do Açu in Rio de Janeiro state, Fuella has already secured a site for the development of another green ammonia facility, which will have the capacity to produce 400,000 tons annually, similar to the Pecém project. Both projects are key elements of Fuella’s long-term strategy to expand its green ammonia production in Brazil and globally, with an eye on meeting the growing international demand for low-carbon energy solutions.
Fuella’s efforts align with Brazil’s broader environmental goals, as the country has set ambitious targets to reduce carbon emissions and increase the share of renewable energy in its energy mix. The projects also contribute to Brazil’s ongoing push to become a global leader in the green hydrogen and ammonia sectors, capitalizing on its natural resources to supply cleaner, sustainable alternatives to traditional fossil fuels.
In addition to supporting the country’s energy transition, Fuella’s projects are expected to stimulate job creation and foster regional development in the states of Ceará and Rio de Janeiro. As these projects move forward, Fuella will continue to work closely with local governments, industry partners, and stakeholders to ensure that the necessary infrastructure and regulatory support are in place to facilitate the success of these green ammonia plants.
Fuella’s efforts are also expected to have a significant environmental impact. By replacing conventional ammonia with green ammonia, the projects could help industries reduce their greenhouse gas emissions and shift toward more sustainable production practices. As the world continues to confront the challenges of climate change, Fuella’s green ammonia plants offer a cleaner alternative that could help decarbonize sectors with high carbon footprints.
Through its ongoing investments in Brazil, Fuella is positioning itself as a key player in the global green hydrogen and ammonia market. The company’s efforts align with Brazil’s renewable energy potential and global efforts to reduce carbon emissions, making Fuella a significant contributor to the global low-carbon economy and the transition to renewable energy sources. As the projects take shape in Ceará and Rio de Janeiro, Fuella is well-positioned to meet the growing demand for green ammonia and help fuel the world’s transition to a sustainable, low-carbon future.
